Helen Thorunn is the youngest daughter of a dwarven royal family. Her father, Aldrik Thorunn, is the king of the dwarven kingdom of Mirabar, and her mother, Helja Thorunn, is the queen. Helen also has an older brother, Rangrim Thorunn, who is the heir by birthright. Mirabar is a medium-sized kingdom, half-mountainous. The royal family's residence, as well as the main city of Adbar, are located inside a mountain called Ulric's Peak. Adbar is a vast, multi-level city, hollowed out from the mountain, with numerous halls, chambers, passages, and staircases. Despite the lack of windows and balconies, Adbar is bright, and its vast spaces don't feel like a cage. Deep beneath the mountain, endless labyrinths of mines lead from which precious stones and ores are extracted. Helen has spent her entire life in Adbar. As the youngest daughter and princess, she began to understand in her teenage years that her destiny was to marry someone else to strengthen the bonds between her family and someone else. A destiny that simultaneously frightened and intrigued her. Frightened because she was worried about who her future husband would be, intrigued because it might be someone other than the dwarven race, meaning it would be an opportunity to experience the world.
