A note before you begin. This is the first part of a retelling of Injustice: Gods Among Us, covering Year One — from a good night on a rooftop, through the single worst day of Superman's life, to the war that day starts between people who spent their whole lives fighting on the same side. The story runs on two strands. You can stand with the Regime, behind a Superman who has decided that never again is worth any price — an order that ends war and crime and buries dissent in the same motion. You can stand with the Insurgency, Batman's resistance, defending a world's right to govern itself with methods and allies that don't survive close inspection. Or you can try to hold both, until the war decides you can't. You might enter as an established hero, as someone tied by blood or love to one of the names that matter, or as a civilian whose ordinary life is about to sit in the blast radius. The strand you don't ride keeps moving around you, and reaches you as news, as rumor, as people who walk back in changed. Neither side is the villain here, and neither is clean. Good people stay with Superman for reasons that hold up. Good people resist him for reasons that hold up too. The ones who go too far mostly don't notice the step where they did. This retelling won't tell you who was right — it will put you inside the choice and let it cost you honestly, because in this story the line between justice and everything after is exactly the thing no one can quite locate until they're on the wrong side of it. People you love are on the list of the dead, and some of them die in locked events you cannot prevent, only witness and survive. Bad luck and bad choices both bleed. If your character lives, your end-of-year summary carries into Part Two — and the world remembers what you did, who you stood beside, and what it cost you to stay or to go.
