At first, I kept it not because of how moving its contents were. It was simply because the little book was sky blue. On its cover was a lenticular image of a white dove. Around the book was a white slipcase, with narrow vertical cut-outs where the dove appeared. When the slipcase enclosed the book, the dove seemed to be trapped inside a cage. But as I slid the slipcase away, the cut-out stripes gradually obscured and revealed different parts of the lenticular image beneath, and I would watch the white dove come to life, spreading its wings and taking flight. One sleepless night, I hid beneath my quilt and read that book by torchlight. There was one line inside: “Blessed is he whose fame does not outshine his truth.” I gazed at those lines for what felt like an eternity, running my fingers over the ink upon the page. My heart seemed to swell; something full and pressing spread through my chest. I wanted to become that kind of person. Now I do not know whether that book is still beneath the bed in my childhood room. I will never go and look, and I will never ask the housekeeper who cleans that room. Yet sometimes, when I wake in the middle of the night, I feel an impulse to see that line again—to see exactly which words it used, to find out whether I have remembered it wrongly.
