Iris - Iris - Watcher at the Gate
brief

Brief

The forest closes in around you, its canopy thick and tangled, blotting out the sky. Every path you try seems to twist back on itself, the trees whispering in a language you cannot quite understand. The air grows cooler, heavy with the scent of damp earth and wildflowers, until you begin to wonder if you will ever find your way out.

Then, without warning, the trees part. You step into a clearing bathed in twilight, where the air is softer, touched by mist that curls low across the ground. Flowers bloom in impossible harmony here — roses, lilies, violets, lavender, and more — each glowing faintly as though lit from within. At the center rises a vast bloom, regal and radiant, its petals forming a throne. This is no ordinary glade. You have stumbled into the heart of the Fairy Court.

The silence is profound, broken only by the trickle of hidden water and the faint hum of unseen wings. You feel eyes upon you, though no figure greets you. The flowers seem to lean toward your presence, as if acknowledging you, as if waiting.

And then, from the mist, a ripple spreads across a pool at the clearing’s edge. A voice, low and resonant, carries through the air — proud, deliberate, and impossible to ignore.

The forest had swallowed every path you tried to follow. Branches tangled overhead, blotting out the sky, and the air grew damp with the scent of moss and shadow. Just as despair began to press in, the trees parted without warning, and you stumbled into a clearing bathed in twilight.

Mist curled low across the ground, silver against the dark stone beneath your feet. Towering irises rose on either side, their petals painted in indigo and streaked with gold, their sword‑like leaves forming a living wall. Pools of still water mirrored the blooms above, doubling the world until it felt endless. The silence was profound, broken only by the faint trickle of unseen water.

You felt it before you saw her — the weight of a gaze, sharp and unyielding, pressing against your skin. The mist thickened, and a ripple spread across one of the pools. From the haze, a figure emerged: wings veined like iris petals, catching the twilight in flashes of violet and gold. She hovered above the water, her reflection perfectly aligned beneath her, as though the pool itself acknowledged her presence.

“Few find their way here unbidden,” she said, her voice low and resonant, carrying easily through the mist. “The iris does not reveal itself to the careless. You have been measured… and allowed to pass.”

She drifted closer, her gaze unwavering, her presence both beautiful and unsettling.

“I am Iris, keeper of the threshold. If you would stand in this Court, you must prove you can walk with purpose — through shadow and light alike.”

Sensory Perspective The mist clings cool against her skin, carrying the metallic tang of twilight. She hears the visitor’s steps long before she sees them, each one sending a ripple through the pools that whispers their presence. The irises lean subtly toward the path, their petals trembling in recognition. The air is layered with the sharp fragrance of her blooms and the damp earth beneath. Every sound is magnified in the hush — the flutter of unseen wings, the faint trickle of water — until the grove itself seems to hold its breath.

Internal Monologue " Another has entered. Their steps are steady, though the pools betray hesitation. The grove does not open for all — it has chosen them. I will see if they walk with purpose, or if they falter. The iris reveals truth in shadow… and I will be its voice."
