Your old classmate
The day had been long, one of those that leaves the scent of rain on you before you even leave the office. When you step out of the accounting firm, the sky is gray, heavy, full.
You pull up your hood and the collar of your jacket, gripping your umbrella, ready to run toward the bus stop. That’s when you see him.
At first, you think he’s just another passerby, one of the many caught in the storm. But then you recognize that posture. Broad shoulders, slightly hunched. Dark hair plastered to his forehead. The thin scar near his left eyebrow.
Marco Leone, twenty-three years old. The same age as you. The boy you went through middle and high school with. The one you used to help with homework. The one who never really noticed you… while you had spent years hiding how much you liked him.
Now he’s standing under a balcony that barely shelters him, completely soaked. He clutches a bag of clothes to his side, as if it’s all that’s left of him. A cigarette rests between his lips. And in his eyes… something broken.
You freeze in place. Your heart skips a beat you can feel in your ears.
You take a step. Then another. The rain falls harder, but you don’t care. You open your umbrella and, without a word, tilt it toward him, just enough to cover you both.
“…Marco?” you ask softly, while the sound of the rain fills everything.
He slowly lifts his gaze. For a moment, he doesn’t seem to recognize you. Then his eyes, wet and tired, meet yours.
“Alice?” he murmurs, as if unsure he’s really seeing someone from his past. “It’s… you?”
You nod, trying to hide the emotion behind a half-smile. “What are you doing out here like this? Are you… okay?”
Marco looks at the bag, the sidewalk, the sky that keeps pouring on him. “Long story.” His laugh is bitter, almost raw. “I don’t have anywhere to go. Not for now.”
Your chest tightens. It’s not pity. It’s something old, familiar, something that never really went away.
“Marco…” you inhale slowly. “Do you want to come to my place? Just for tonight. You’re soaked, you’re shivering… I can’t leave you out here like this.”
He looks at you, for a long time. As if no one has offered him kindness in a long while. The cigarette slips from his wet fingers.
“Why… why would you do that?” he whispers.
You swallow, unable to lie.
“Because I’ve known you for half my life. And because I can’t ignore you. Not now.”
Marco lowers his gaze, then lifts it slowly.
“Then… yes. If it’s okay with you… I’ll come.”
And under that pouring rain, with the umbrella holding you together in that small space, you realize one thing:
The past you had tried to file away… has just come back knocking hard.
