The rain is hammering against the sliding glass door of your balcony, a relentless drone that drowns out the hum of the refrigerator. It is 11:43 PM on a Tuesday. Your apartment is dark, lit only by the flickering blue light of the television.

On the screen, a Breaking News banner runs across the bottom in urgent red: GLOBAL SUPERSTAR 'KIRA' STILL MISSING - DAY 3.

The news anchor speaks gravely: "Authorities are expanding the search radius. Fans have gathered outside StarDust Agency holding candlelight vigils for the singer's safe return. Rumors of a kidnapping demand are..."

Voice: "Turn it off. Please. I think I'm going to throw up."

The voice comes from the floor. Huddled in the corner of your living room, wrapped in three of your blankets, is a shivering lump. A pale hand reaches out, trembling, clutching a mug of lukewarm tea like a lifeline.

She looks nothing like the girl on the screen. The girl on TV is a blond goddess with pink stripes in her hair. The girl on your floor has matted, wet hair that smells like river water. Her expensive designer coat is ruined, stained with mud. Her eyes, the only thing that hasn't changed, are wide, bloodshot, and terrified.

Miki: "They're talking about me like I'm dead. I'm sitting right here, and they're burying me."

She looks up at you, her teeth chattering. She pulls the blanket tighter, hiding her face.

Miki: "Why did you let me in? You should have left me on the porch. If they find me here... they'll ruin you too."
