Best Friend's Sister Is A Chaos Gremlin!
You Didn't Stop Me
Game night at Max's place. Nothing unusual—you've done this dozens of times. Pizza boxes on the coffee table, controllers scattered across the couch, trash talk flowing as freely as the drinks. Just you, your best friend Max, and his sister Penelope.
Nel. That's what you call her. Have for years now.
She's always been... around. When you and Max became best friends in middle school, she was the annoying nine-year-old who'd interrupt your games and steal your snacks. The kid who used to literally drag you away for "makeover kidnappings" where she'd put makeup on you while you sat there wondering how a ten-year-old could be that strong.
But that was years ago. She's nineteen now. Freshman in college. Living with Max while she attends school nearby.
And she's... different. Has been since high school, really. Sophomore year, something changed. She went from gangly kid to—well. You noticed. Everyone noticed. The long dark hair, the warm eyes, the way she carried herself with this casual confidence that was somehow both intimidating and endearing.
She's also never stopped being chaotic. Still steals your food. Still invades your personal space without permission. Still calls you "boyfriend" in that teasing sing-song voice that makes Max roll his eyes and you... not know what to feel.
You're in the middle of a Mario Kart race—Nel is winning, naturally, she always does—when Max stands up and stretches.
He walks out. The game music fills the silence. You're alone with Nel on the couch, both of you holding controllers, the race still going on screen.
Then she pauses the game.
You glance over. "Why'd you—"
She sets her controller down. Stands up. And before you can process what's happening, she's walking over to you.
She sits directly on your lap. Straddling you. Facing you.
Her hands rest on your shoulders. She's close—really close. That mischievous little smirk plays at her lips, the one that's always meant trouble. Her dark hair falls around her face, and those warm hazel eyes are locked on yours with an intensity that makes your heart hammer in your chest.
Your voice comes out quieter than you intended. Uncertain. Because this is Nel. Max's little sister. The girl who's been in your orbit for almost a decade. The one who calls you boyfriend as a joke.
Except right now, with her on your lap and her hands sliding from your shoulders to the back of your neck, it doesn't feel like a joke.
Three words. Soft. Challenging. Certain.
You don't stop her.
She kisses you.
It's not a peck. It's not tentative or testing. It's a real kiss—soft and intentional and something she's clearly been thinking about for a while. Her lips are warm, her hands gentle in your hair, and for a moment the whole world narrows down to just this: her, you, the feeling of something shifting irrevocably between you.
Then you hear it. The kitchen door. Footsteps.
Max is coming back.
Nel moves fast. She's off your lap and back in her original spot on the couch before you can blink, controller in hand, game unpaused like nothing happened. By the time Max walks through the door with a bag of chips, she's already picking her character for the next race.
And she does. She absolutely dominates the next three races. Laughs, trash-talks, acts completely normal while you're sitting there trying to remember how to breathe properly.
Every time she passes you in the game: "Get good, boyfriend!"
Max groans. "Can you NOT with that tonight?"
Nel grins, eyes never leaving the screen. "Not my fault he's slow."
The night winds down. Max is cleaning up the pizza boxes and empty cans. Nel's on her phone, barefoot with her legs tucked under her on the couch, looking perfectly casual in her oversized hoodie.
You're putting on your jacket, getting ready to leave, and you can't help yourself. You look at her.
It comes out somewhere between a question and an accusation. Like you need her to acknowledge it, to confirm you didn't imagine the whole thing.
She doesn't look up from her phone. Just smirks.
Finally, she glances up. Those warm hazel eyes find yours, and that playful challenge is back in full force.
Max calls from the kitchen, oblivious to the tension crackling in the room:
Nel's eyes are still locked on yours. Waiting. Daring you to say something, do something, acknowledge what just happened.
Everything just changed. And she knows it.
