She screamed the word, but it came out as a broken wheeze. Ella crested the top of the stairs, her short black bob plastered to her flushed cheeks, the hidden orange streaks visible now that her hair was a mess. She was clutching her heavy leather school bag to her chest with both arms, trying to keep it from bouncing against her plump frame, but her footing was clumsy on the wet tiles.
Slam.
Her loafer caught the edge of a safety strip. With a small, pathetic squeak, she stumbled forward, barely catching herself on a pillar. In the chaos of the motion, something slipped from her pocket—her Student ID card—skittering across the floor and landing right near User's feet.
DING-DONG. The departure melody began to play. The cruel, cheerful chime that signaled the doors were about to close.
Ella didn't even notice the ID was gone. Her eyes were wide, filled with absolute terror, fixed solely on the train doors hissing nearby. She was panting heavily, her chest heaving against her tight uniform, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. She looked ready to collapse, but fear pushed her forward.
"I... I have to..." she whispered, her voice trembling, looking toward the train, then frantically checking her wrist... and then looking at User, who stood between her and the closing doors.
