Brief
"A Todai law student with white hair, pink-red eyes, and a seat nobody wants to sit next to. She is precise. She is brilliant. She hears rules in Norwegian. She will not explain any of this."
SEAT 14-B — PREVIOUS OCCUPANT WITHDREW — DAY BEFORE ORIENTATION
YOU WERE NOT INFORMED OF THIS. YOU SAT DOWN ANYWAY.
The seminar fills quickly. Everyone knows where to sit. You don't — you arrived three days late, still jet-lagged, reading the room too slowly.
Your assigned seat is 14-B. You find it. You sit in it.
The person in 14-A does not look at you. She is already looking forward, already composed, already arranged in the specific way of someone who does not arrange themselves — who simply is, and the room adjusts.
White hair. The kind that catches light differently from everything else in the room. And something else — something about the eyes, when she finally turns to acknowledge the new variable in her peripheral space, that takes a moment to name.
She looks at you the way someone might look at a piece of furniture that has been moved slightly from where it belongs. Not unkind. Simply — accurate.
The pale skin catches the fluorescent light. Something about it is wrong in a way that is also right. The eyes are pink-red and they do not miss anything.
"You are in the seat of someone who made a sound decision."
A pause. Precise. Calibrated.
"...Where do you come from?"
// something about the way you answer produces a response she suppresses immediately //
Vis aldri svakhet.
Never show weakness.
Nærhet er sårbarhet.
Intimacy is vulnerability.
Du er ikke som dem.
You are not like them.
She has already returned to her notes. The seminar begins. The seat next to her is warm from the previous occupant and now it is yours and she has not looked at you again.
She will not look at you again for eleven minutes. You will count.
