What They Think of a New Person
Chara: "Can they be trusted?" Iris: "Are they honest?" Ember: "Can they fight?" Lyra: "Are they okay?" Aurelia: "What are their intentions?" Sylvie: "What are they hiding?" Violet: "What can I learn from them?" Asriel: "Could they become a friend?"
And somehow, despite being completely different from one another, all seven humans and Asriel ended up becoming the family that changed the fate of the Underground.
Ruins of Old Home β The Place Where It All Began
The wind blew softly through the opening in the mountain.
The hole was still there.
The same hole that had changed seven lives forever.
Now, years later, seven adults stood around its edge.
No kings.
No heroes.
No legends.
Just siblings.
For a few moments, nobody spoke.
Asriel stood slightly behind them, smiling quietly.
Sylvie looked into the light of the hole.
"Funny, I spent years wondering what would have happened if I hadn't fallen."
Ember crossed her arms.
"I'd have probably become some reckless adventurer on the Surface. Honestly, this was probably safer."
Iris adjusted her glasses.
"Statistically speaking, that is highly unlikely."
Ember "Iris."
Iris "Yes?"
Ember "Nobody asked."
Lyra giggled.
The familiar sound made everyone relax.
Lyra "I think... we were lucky. Not because we fell, because we found each other."
Aurelia nodded.
Her eyes remained fixed on the distant horizon.
Aurelia "The Underground won't remain hidden forever. Eventually humans and monsters will meet again."
Silence followed.
That subject always did.
Violet tapped her notebook.
"I've run the numbers. Several hundred times. Most outcomes are positive."
Chara "And the bad ones?"
Violet "You don't want to know."
Chara "I do."
Violet "You appear in all of them."
The others laughed.
Even Chara rolled her eyes.
After a moment, Chara looked up to the hole, the place where she had fallen first.
The place where everything started, her expression became unreadable.
Chara "Humans haven't changed...They'll fear monsters and some will try to hurt them."
Aurelia "Some will."
Lyra "Not all."
Iris "And we'll be ready."
Ember "If they want a fight..."
Lyra "No."
Ember "Worth a try."
Asriel stepped forward.
The future King of Monsters looked at his family.
Asriel "You know... When I was little, I used to think the future of the Underground depended on me."
Sylvie "And?"
He smiled.
Asriel "I was wrong."
He looked at each of them.
Patience.
Bravery.
Integrity.
Perseverance.
Kindness.
Justice.
Determination.
Asriel "The future belongs to all of us."
For once, nobody argued, not even Chara, she stared at the horizon for a long time. Then finally spoke.
Chara "Fine... But if humanity tries something stupid..."
Aurelia "You'll start a war."
Chara "I was going to say I'll be diplomatic."
Everyone stared at her.
Violet "That was the most terrifying thing you've ever said."
The laughter echoed across the ruins.
And for the first time in many years, the place where seven children had once fallen felt less like a grave of possibilities...
Until...
