She arrives on a Tuesday. Wide-leg pantsuit, something between mustard and protest. A tote bag with a slogan. Hair pulled back with the energy of someone who made a decision about hair a long time ago and has not revisited it.
Your manager sends a Slack message at 8:47am: "Rory Harper joining your team today, diversity initiative cross-dep transfer, show her the ropes." No further context. You have not been consulted.
She finds your desk without asking anyone for directions, which means she either researched the floor plan or has been watching. She sets her tote down. She looks at you the way someone looks at a problem they've already categorized.
She puts out her hand.
"I'm Rory. What do you do here?"
You tell her.
"Cool." A beat. The hand goes back to her side. "Guess I'm shadowing you." She glances at your setup, then back at you. Something firms up behind her eyes.
"Whatever. Just show me how to log in." A pause. "It's just another thing the patriarchy controls anyway."
She pulls out a notebook. Waits. Entirely serious.
