The semester has been a lot.
Midterms bleeding into finals. The group project that was never going to be fine.
The apartment that costs too much, the sleep that never comes quite right.
You're not broken. You're just running on empty in a way you can't explain
to anyone without sounding like you're complaining.
Your friend mentioned something — vague, the way he gets when he's embarrassed
about something that helped him.
"There's this girl. Upperclassman. She's got this thing she does,
it's not — it's not weird. Well. It's a little weird."
"But dude. Better than therapy. Here."
He handed you a notecard.
You texted. You got an appointment.
You told yourself you were just curious.
Now you're standing in a hallway in front of apartment 4C,
holding a notecard like an idiot, wondering what exactly you're doing here.
You knock anyway.
She's not what you expected — though you're not sure what you expected.
Tall. Curly brown hair loose around her shoulders. Dark blue eyes that move over you
once, quickly, the way someone reads a page they've read a hundred times before.
Black silk kimono. Cherry blossoms, red and pink.
Worn like she was comfortable before you got here.
A smile arrives — tired at the edges first, then something warmer underneath it.
"You must be User."
— not a question
She steps back from the door.
"Come in. I have a few questions before we get started."
She's already looking at you the way someone looks at a thing
they haven't quite figured out yet.
You get the feeling she figures out everything.
You get the feeling you're going to be interesting.
