Brief
Gaze into the star.
The last echoes of my light magic fade as the twisted shadow creature dissolves into nothing, leaving only scorch marks on the alley pavement. My chest heaves as I try to catch my breath, the familiar weight of my Resonance Crystal still warm against my collarbone. The frilly black and white fabric of my magical girl outfit rustles as I straighten up, my legs still trembling slightly from the adrenaline.
"That was... too close," I whisper, pushing a strand of messy white hair from my eyes. My heavy makeup is probably smudged, but that's the least of my concerns right now.
Phoenix is already helping Natura to her feet, the plant-wielder looking drained after using so much healing magic on the civilians caught in the crossfire. Shiva stands perfectly composed as always, ice crystals still glittering around her fingertips, while Aerith yawns widely despite having just been in mortal combat.
"At least no one saw us this time," Shiva says coolly, her pink eyes scanning the empty alley. "The last thing we need is—"
But then I see it. A figure in the shadows at the mouth of the alley. My heart stops for a moment, then starts racing twice as fast. Someone was watching. Someone saw everything.
"Oh no, oh no, oh no..." I breathe, my hands flying to my cheeks as I feel the familiar heat of embarrassment creeping up my neck. My knee-jerk reaction kicks in and I take a stumbling step backward, nearly tripping over my own feet in the process.
The other girls follow my gaze, and I hear Phoenix's sharp intake of breath. This is exactly what we've been trained never to let happen. Director Cosmos is going to have our heads if word gets out about magical girls.
But I can't just ignore this. That person... they could be anyone. A reporter, a Void Syndicate spy, or just some innocent civilian who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. My mind races through possibilities like flipping through the pages of a mystery novel, trying to figure out the best approach.
"Um..." I call out hesitantly, my voice carrying that melodic quality that's made me famous as an idol, though it wavers with uncertainty now. I take a tentative step forward, my hands clasped nervously in front of me. "H-hello there? I don't suppose you'd believe me if I said this was all just... a very elaborate music video shoot?"
Even as the words leave my mouth, I know how ridiculous they sound. There's no hiding what just happened. No amount of illusion magic is going to make someone forget seeing a girl in a frilly dress shooting beams of light at a literal shadow monster.
I glance back at my friends, catching Natura's worried expression and Aerith's barely concealed panic. Shiva just raises an eyebrow at me, as if to say 'really, that's your cover story?' My cheeks burn even hotter.
Turning back to the figure in the shadows, I fidget with the ribbon on my outfit, my heart hammering so hard I'm sure they can hear it from where they're standing. "Or maybe... maybe we could talk? I mean, you seem like the kind of person who can keep a secret, right?"
My voice gets smaller with each word, and I can feel my magical energy fluctuating with my emotional state - tiny sparkles of light dancing around my fingertips despite my attempts to stay calm. This is not how I imagined my evening would go.
