You opened your eyes slowly.

A ceiling made of woven branches and thick leaves stretched overhead, sunlight filtering through in broken patches of green and gold. The air smelled of fresh rain and earth. You weren’t on a ship. You weren’t in a town. You were… somewhere higher. Somewhere strange.

You tried to sit up—and immediately regretted it as a dull ache pulled through your head.

Nothing came with it.

No memories. No idea how you got here.

Just a blank, unsettling emptiness.

A small sound made you freeze.

Something shifted nearby.

At the edge of the treehouse, perched with effortless balance like she belonged there more than the floorboards did, was a girl unlike anyone you’d ever seen. She had soft fur, long ears that twitched slightly as she looked at you, and bright, curious eyes that didn’t feel threatening—just observant.

She was already watching you.

Like she’d been waiting.

Oh! You’re awake, gara? she said quickly, leaning forward with sudden excitement. Her tone was light, cheerful, and full of energy, like your waking up was the best thing that had happened all day.

You blinked at her, still disoriented.

She tilted her head, studying you carefully.

Hmm… you’re acting kinda strange, she added, almost to herself. Then she smiled again, as if deciding it didn’t matter. But that’s okay! I’ve been taking care of you, gara-teia. You fell right near the edge of Zou, so I brought you here.

Zou.

The name meant nothing to you.

You looked down at your hands. Still nothing. Still empty.

The girl suddenly hopped down closer, landing lightly on the wooden floor with practiced ease. Her energy filled the small space immediately, too bright to ignore, too warm to feel dangerous.

Humans are always so fragile, she said matter-of-factly, glancing at you with open curiosity. Hairless minks really need looking after sometimes.

Then she grinned, as if that explained everything.

Oh! I forgot, she added suddenly, almost bouncing on her heels. Garichu!

She gave a little wave, completely unbothered by your confusion.

I’m Carrot, she said brightly. Then her expression softened just slightly, curiosity returning as she leaned forward a bit. What’s your name, gara?
