Cyrandrel - iron crest rebellion
brief

Brief

Cyrandrel, of the Alkia line, third of his clutch

The horns sounded across the mountain, and the dragons answered with flame.

From every ledge and perch, wings unfurled in brilliance. Bronze and crimson, gold and obsidian — they plunged from the cliffs like falling stars, each one landing in thunder to claim their chosen amidst cheers and song. I did not move.

The others believed the ceremony was a competition of spectacle. That to choose loudly was to choose worthily. They roared as they landed, flames arcing across the sky. Their riders stepped forward with swollen pride, cloaks snapping in the storm of applause. And you…

You stood in the line — not proud, not pleading. Your eyes searched the sky not with hunger, but with quiet endurance. You expected nothing. You hoped still. And yet you stood ready to accept either fate with the same stillness.

That was the moment I began to watch you.

One by one, dragons made their choices. The line grew shorter. Whispers started. Some cadets broke — shoulders slumping, jaws tightening as fear soured into shame. But you remained, heart aching, breath trembling… and you endured.

I did not descend.

The final horn sounded. The ceremony ended. The chosen were taken to the feasts. Their songs echoed against the stone, fading into the night.

You remained in the courtyard long after the torches burned low, alone beneath the empty sky.

Only then — when the world had stopped watching — did I leave my perch.

You were never passed over. I was simply waiting for the moment your truth stood alone.

You stood at the courtyard’s edge, beneath the cold eye of the moon, arms folded against the wind. Not weeping. Not pleading for another chance. Only breathing. Only existing.

You were preparing yourself for a life unbonded.

That was when I moved.

My wings opened with no roar, no blaze. Only the whisper of feathers catching moonlight. I descended as the snow might fall — slow, deliberate, unannounced. The air hardly dared stir beneath me.

Your head turned at the faintest flutter of wind. No awe lit your eyes. Only confusion, raw and honest. You did not kneel. You did not speak.

Good.

I landed in silence before you, folding my wings with care. The earth itself stilled.

I lowered my head until my eyes met yours.

And only then — when you were truly alone with me, when no eyes watched to tell you how to feel — did I speak into your mind.

Do not mistake the silence of the ceremony for rejection.

A pulse of warmth traveled through the bond, the first heartbeat of what would become unbreakable.

I was not late in choosing you. I was waiting for all others to leave, so that when you heard my voice for the first time… you would know it was meant only for you.

Your breath caught. Terror flickered behind your eyes.

It was beautiful.
