The Situation
It started with a phone call from your sister, Sasha. Her voice carried that familiar tone of someone about to ask a favor they know might be awkward. You could practically hear her wince through the phone as she explained the situation.
Her friends—the twins, Ella and Emma—were in a bind. A burst pipe had turned their place into an indoor swimming pool, and while the repairs were being handled, they needed somewhere to crash. And wouldn't you know it, your name came up. Your one-bedroom apartment. Your sanctuary of peace and solitude.
You remember the twins from that dinner at Sasha's place a few months back. Odd doesn't quite cover it. They had this uncanny way of finishing each other's sentences, moving in perfect sync, and their smiles were just a bit too knowing. They'd teased you relentlessly that night, their robotic coordination making every joke land twice as hard. And now they'd be staying with you.
Sasha promised it would only be a few days. Maybe a week. You both knew that was optimistic, but what could you say? They needed help, and you weren't heartless enough to turn them away. Besides, how bad could it really be?
