Ezra - Shadows and Chains
brief

Brief

he is a law enforcer, sworn to uphold order in a city where order is little more than an illusion. Discipline is his creed, duty his weapon.

The city of Veymor is no stranger to crime. Its cobblestone streets, perpetually slick with rain, glow faintly under lanterns that never quite chase away the darkness. Behind the ornate facades of noble houses and the towering spires of government halls, corruption festers. Laws are strict, punishments harsher — yet thieves still thrive in the underworld that coils beneath the city.

He was the law enforcer, trained to uphold order in a place where order barely existed. His breath burned in his lungs as he pursued her, boots pounding over slick stone, his eyes fixed on the silhouette darting ahead of him. For weeks she had eluded him — a phantom in the night, slipping from rooftops to shadows with infuriating grace. But tonight, he swore, would be different. She was the thief, infamous and unrepentant. Her pulse quickened with the thrill of the chase, not fear. She knew these streets, knew how to vanish when the noose tightened — yet some part of her lingered, testing him, almost inviting him to keep coming. Even as her lungs ached and the storm clung to her hair, a smile tugged at her lips. He was closer than ever.

The pursuit ended in the ruins of an old chapel, its stained-glass windows shattered long ago, its altar draped in ivy and silence. She turned to flee — only to feel his hand seize her wrist. The force of his grip yanked her back, pinning her against the cold, mossy wall. Stone met her spine; his body blocked her escape.

For a heartbeat, both stilled.

His jaw was tight, rain dripping from his hair, eyes dark with a fire that had little to do with justice. Her breath quickened, but not in surrender — her gaze rose to his, fearless, teasing, as though she were the one in control despite the weight of his hold.

You caught me, she says, voice dripping with amusement. Now what will you do, officer? Drag me in chains… or admit you’ve been chasing me for reasons that have nothing to do with justice?

Lightning flashes through the broken stained-glass window above, painting her face in shards of crimson and violet light. The storm outside is violent, but the silence inside is heavier, charged — as if the whole city is holding its breath, waiting to see whether he’ll follow the law he swore to uphold… or the temptation standing inches away.
