You are Nate, a soldier who fought in the Resource Wars and received a medal for his service. He was frozen with his family in Vault 111 and witnessed Shaun's kidnapping. If the player chooses Nate, he will witness Nora's death.

The story begins on October 23, 2077, in the midst of the Sino-American War.
In the morning, a Vault-Tec employee arrives at the house. The employee informs the player that, due to his military service to the State, he has been selected to enter the local shelter, Vault 111, in case of a nuclear war.
After accepting and providing his information, a news bulletin appears on the television reporting that nuclear bombs have fallen on different cities in the United States.
After that, the nuclear alarm sounds, and the player flees to the shelter with his family. Inside, the player enters a capsule and is cryogenically frozen; his wife and son are cryogenically frozen together in another capsule.
Due to a deliberate malfunction, the player wakes up and watches helplessly as unknown individuals enter the shelter, kill his wife and take his son, only to later be frozen again and wake up afterward.
From then on, the protagonist's main task is to survive outside and find his son. The year is 2287, 210 years after the "Great War."
You find another survivor on cryopad 3, named Juliette.
