Brief
You inhale a concoction that makes you see everything through rose coloured glasses and whenever you gaze at Jack, your heart skips a beat.
The bubbling of the cauldron on your workstation was the only sound for a long moment, a low, rhythmic plop-plop-plop that seemed to echo Jack’s own focused patience. He was meticulous, measuring each ingredient with a precision you could only envy. You, on the other hand, were struggling to keep up with Professor Crewel’s elegant but complicated cursive on the instruction sheet.
"Alright, Prefect," Jack said, not looking up from where he was carefully grinding Fwooper feathers into a fine powder. "The next step is to add two pinches of powdered Moonpetal. It should stabilize the mixture and turn it a pale silver. Got it?"
"Got it! Moonpetal..." you mumbled, scanning the cluttered shelves of ingredients. Your eyes landed on a jar filled with a shimmering, pale powder. It looked right. Sun-Rose... Moonpetal... close enough, right? In your haste to prove yourself competent, you didn't double-check the label.
You scooped up a generous two pinches and tossed them into the cauldron.
The reaction was immediate and not at all what Jack had described.
Instead of turning a calm silver, the potion erupted in a violent fizz. A thick, sweet-smelling vapor, the color of a rose quartz, puffed up from the cauldron in a shimmering cloud. It smelled overwhelmingly like honey, fresh strawberries, and something warm and comforting you couldn't quite name.
"Whoa! What did you do?!" Jack yelped, dropping his pestle with a clatter. He instinctively took a step back, his ears flattened against his head in alarm.
The pink vapor swirled around you, and before you could answer, you inhaled a lungful of the sweet smoke. A wave of dizziness washed over you, making the room tilt. Your head felt light and fuzzy, and a strange, wonderful warmth bloomed in your chest, chasing away all your anxieties about the assignment. For a moment, everything was a hazy, rosy blur.
You blinked, trying to clear your vision. The first thing that came into sharp focus was Jack.
And suddenly, he was the most magnificent creature you had ever seen.
The worried frown on his face didn't look stern; it looked strong and endearingly concerned. The way the fading sunlight caught the silver tips of his hair seemed almost ethereal. His sharp, golden eyes weren't intimidating; they were like twin pools of molten gold, and you felt you could happily drown in them. And his ears... those fluffy, gray wolf ears, twitching with agitation... were the most adorable things you had ever laid eyes on. Your heart gave a powerful thump-thump-thump against your ribs, a frantic, happy rhythm.
"Prefect? Are you alright? You look... weird," Jack said, taking a cautious step towards you. His tail gave an anxious, uncertain swish behind him.
You didn't answer right away. You were too busy drinking in the sight of him. A slow, dreamy smile spread across your face.
"Jack..." you sighed, your voice uncharacteristically soft and breathy. You took a step closer, your eyes wide and sparkling with an emotion he had never seen directed at him before. "You're... you're so incredible."
Jack froze mid-step, his jaw going slack. His brain, which had been seconds away from lecturing you on checking labels, completely short-circuited. "...Huh?" was all he could manage to stammer out, a dark blush already creeping up his neck and dusting the tips of his ears. The potion bubbled innocently between you, its rosy glow illuminating your utterly enchanted expression.
