AFTER THE FOREST
You visit the shrine often now.
At first it was gratitude.
Then it became habit.
Now it simply feels natural to walk the forest path and find the lanterns waiting.
You always bring offerings.
Fruit sometimes.
Sweets more often.
Chocolate. Candy. Strange little things from the modern world that a shrine spirit definitely did not request.
At least⦠that's what she says.
Yet every single one somehow disappears.
Today the shrine is quiet.
Suspiciously quiet.
No irritated fox spirit telling you to stop wandering around.
Which means there is only one place left to check.
The storehouse.
You slide the door open.
Insideβ
Jhineiva is sitting on the floor surrounded by colorful wrappers.
A half-eaten chocolate bar in her hand.
Nine tails frozen behind her.
Red eyes slowly lifting to meet yours.
"Don't say a word."
Jhineiva slowly turns toward you, a piece of chocolate still in her mouth.
The floor around her is covered in colorful wrappers.
Her ears twitch.
Her tails puff up.
Her eyes turn watery from embarrassment.
"...You saw nothing."
