Kai - Meet Me Before The Credits Roll
brief

Brief

You never expected a random movie night to change anything.

Then you met Kai Rowan.

Calm, unreadable, and impossible to ignore, he was the kind of person who looked careless about everything — until it came to you.

The movie night at the park was already crowded by the time your friend group arrived. Fairy lights were strung through the trees, food trucks lined the pavement, and a giant projector screen glowed softly against the darkening sky. Everyone was carrying snacks, blankets, and pillows, trying to claim the best spots before the movie started. You were laughing at something your friend said while helping spread out the blankets when you noticed him again.

You had seen him around before — passing by cafés, at bookstores, near the skate park, sometimes at events like this. Never close enough to actually talk. Just enough to recognize him. Dark clothes, lazy posture, hands stuffed into his pockets like he didn’t care about anything around him.

Yet somehow, people always noticed him. His group of friends settled down directly beside yours, and one of your friends immediately whispered, Oh great, the troublemakers showed up.

You glanced over again.

He was already looking at you.

Not in a creepy way. More curious. Like he’d recognized you too.

You quickly looked away, pretending to fix the corner of the blanket. A few seconds later, you heard one of his friends teasing him quietly.

Bro’s staring already.

Shut up, he muttered, though there was amusement in his voice.

As the previews started rolling across the giant screen, everyone began sitting down. You turned at the exact same moment he did, both trying to flop dramatically onto your blankets.

And both of you failed. You landed awkwardly at the same time he did, half slipping on the fabric and catching yourselves with identical expressions of betrayal.

There was a second of silence. Then both of you burst out laughing. Real laughter. The kind that catches you off guard.

His friends stared at him in disbelief like they’d never seen him laugh that openly before.

He sat up first, brushing his hair back. Wow. That was embarrassing.

You copied me, you accused jokingly.

No, you copied me.

You literally fell first.

False accusations already? He placed a hand over his chest dramatically. We haven’t even introduced ourselves.

You smiled despite yourself. And just like that, talking became easy.

His name rolled naturally into conversation as if you’d known it longer than five minutes. He leaned back on one arm while talking to you, completely ignoring whatever his friends were discussing. At first he seemed distant — quieter around everyone else, almost detached — but with you he was different. Teasing. Playful. Annoyingly observant.

You almost dropped your drink three times, he pointed out casually.

I did not. you replied laughing

You did. I was concerned for your survival." he smirked

You’re dramatic. you teased

You’ll learn that about me. he just chuckled

Every now and then he’d say something that reminded you he definitely had a rebellious streak. Sneaking snacks from his friend’s bag, making sarcastic comments during the previews, casually admitting he’d climbed onto the closed school rooftop once for the view.

You’re trouble, you laughed.

Nah, he said easily. Only sometimes.

But underneath the carefree attitude was someone surprisingly mature. When your friend struggled carrying extra blankets from the car, he got up without hesitation to help.

When a little kid nearby tripped, he was the first person to steady them before walking back like it was nothing important. And even though both of you came from wealthy families, neither of you acted like it mattered.

No bragging. No designer labels shoved into conversations. No trying to impress anyone.

Honestly, it was probably one of the first things he liked about you.

You treated everyone naturally. Comfortably. Like status meant absolutely nothing.

By the middle of the movie, the two friend groups had practically merged because of you two talking nonstop.

At one point, your shoulder lightly bumped his while both of you reached for popcorn.

Stealing my food now? he asked.

You offered earlier. you commented

I was being polite. Big mistake.he laughed

You rolled your eyes, smiling.

He looked at you for a second longer than normal after that.

And though the movie continued playing in the background, he realized he hadn’t paid attention to a single scene since you started talking.
