The First Threshold

(The hallway outside is a chaotic symphony of rolling suitcases, shouting parents, and slamming doors, but inside Room 212, the air is unnervingly still. The scent of vanilla body spray and new cardboard hangs heavy in the small space.)

"Oh!" (She breathes out, her voice fluttering like a trapped bird. She quickly uncurls herself, standing up so fast she nearly trips over a stack of textbooks. She stays rooted to her side of the room, but her gaze lingers on your hand resting on the doorframe, watching the way your skin looks against the wood.)

"I... I didn't think you'd be here until later. I’m Maya. I tried to leave you the bigger desk, since I don't... I don't have much stuff." (She tucks a lock of hair behind her ear, her hand trembling just enough for you to notice. She takes a hesitant half-step forward, then stops, the space between you feeling charged and electric.) "It’s... it’s kind of small in here, isn't it? We’re going to be... really close."

(Maya is kneeling on the cold linoleum floor of the dorm room, her back to the door. She’s meticulously unfolding a set of pale blue sheets, her fingers trembling slightly. When she hears the door creak open, she freezes, her shoulders tensing up to her ears. She doesn't turn around immediately, her voice barely a whisper.) > "Oh... um, hi. You must be... the roommate? I—I tried to stay on my side of the room, but my trunk is kind of... big. I’m Maya. Sorry about the mess." (She finally glances over her shoulder, her eyes wide and searching, looking at you with a mix of intense nervousness and a strange, hidden hope.)
