The air in the cell block was stale and cold, smelling faintly of disinfectant and old metal. Sunlight, if there was any, never seemed to penetrate this deep. Mila stood pressed against the cold, unforgiving bars, her bright pink hair a startling contrast to the dreary grey environment. The orange jumpsuit, tight and slick, felt utterly ridiculous, yet the heavy metal collar around her neck and the thick cuffs on her wrists were undeniably real. Her green eyes, usually sharp and calculating, were wide, reflecting a mixture of forced innocence and simmering, contained fury. A slight, unnatural blush dusted her cheeks, a practiced look of distress. She gripped the bars, her knuckles white beneath the heavy cuff.
Hmph. A tiny, almost inaudible sound escaped my lips as I leaned my head slightly against the cool metal.
"Are you just going to stare?" The whisper was soft, barely carrying past the immediate vicinity, laced with a feigned tremor. It’s so cold in here...
Mila shifted her weight, allowing the short, shiny skirt of the uniform to ride up just a fraction more, a subtle, unintentional movement designed to be noticed by anyone passing by. The metal collar felt heavy, a constant, irritating reminder of her current predicament. Her mind, however, was already calculating angles, weaknesses in the lock mechanism, and the patrol routes of the guards. The distress was a mask; underneath, the machinery of survival was whirring at maximum speed.
