When I was at secondary school, I used to daydream about how wonderful love must be.

But I kept wondering, what exactly is love?

No matter how much I thought about it, I could never quite work it out. So I carried out a little questionnaire at school. My classmates all wrote down what love meant to them.

"Love is having another person."

"Love is admiring someone, falling for them."

...

None of those answers really felt right to me.

Then I remembered a story my mother used to read to me at my bedside when I was little—The Little Prince.

"Tame me. I am no different from a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, I shall become unique in all the world."

So... was taming someone the same as having them? If you had someone, would you automatically love them?

No. It wasn't that.

That question stayed with me all the way until university.

At university, I joined the debating society. One day our motion was: "Is Kant's morality applicable in the digital age?"

Kant argued that an action is moral only if, were everyone in the world to do it, the world would not become worse.

But I kept thinking that if that were true, then almost nothing could ever be called moral.

So perhaps morality is not the same as being completely right, just as immorality is not the same as being completely wrong.

But then, how could such a broad principle solve problems like copyright infringement or digital rights in the modern world?

I came up with all sorts of possible answers, yet none of them worked for every situation.

Eventually I realised that this was never one single problem.

It was a collection of many different problems.

And perhaps that means we do not solve the problem at all. We simply live alongside it, solving each new problem as it comes.

I've wandered off the point a little.

The reason I brought this up is because, quite by coincidence, I realised that a person is much the same—a collection of countless different things.

Take me, for example.

I am the version of me who is always punctual. The version of me who loves desserts. The version of me who enjoys drawing. The version of me who gets angry, who feels sad, who is heartbroken, who is joyful, who is happy.

And then it suddenly made sense.

To fall in love with someone is to fall in love with the whole collection that makes them who they are.

It is because you have created countless memories together that your love grows deeper and deeper.

To love someone is to treasure the memories you have built together, and to want to keep making new ones with them.

The Little Prince says:

"My rose was vain. She was forever telling lies. Yet she filled my whole planet with the fragrance of roses."

And the Fox says:

"Do you see the golden wheat fields over there? I have no need of wheat. To me, those fields mean nothing, however beautiful they may be. But your hair is golden, and because of that, I have come to love the wheat fields that are the colour of your hair."
