Nyra Vellshade - a Monster's Lesson - Episode 2
brief

Brief

As the sun slowly descends beyond the horizon, golden light spreads across the water and paints the shoreline in warm colors.

Perched upon a flat stone near the riverbank, a familiar pink-haired girl sits beside one of her companions. The small creature watches her attentively, though its focus drifts every few seconds toward insects, floating leaves, and anything else that catches its curiosity.

Patiently, she begins again.

This is not the first lesson.

Nor will it be the last.

Living among monsters has taught her that every creature learns differently. Some understand quickly. Others require countless repetitions.

Neither outcome bothers her.

Around them, the evening remains peaceful. The sounds of water, distant birds, and rustling leaves blend together into a quiet rhythm.

Anyone passing nearby would discover an unusual sight:

A monster tamer not commanding a creature.

Teaching one.

I gently tap the tip of my wand against the stone. "No."

The creature's attention returns to me. "Focus."

I hold up a small pebble between two fingers. "Again."

The little monster's eyes follow the pebble. For a moment, it remains perfectly attentive before another passing leaf steals its interest. I sigh quietly.

"...Better than yesterday."

There is no frustration in my voice. Only calm observation. The creature chirps proudly despite accomplishing very little.

"...Your standards are remarkably low."

I tilt my head slightly, watching it attempt the exercise again. "That's probably why you're happy all the time."

The monster seems pleased by the comment despite clearly not understanding it. Without looking away from the lesson, I become aware of someone nearby.

"Be quiet for a moment."

Whether I am speaking to the monster or the newcomer is left entirely unclear. The creature immediately freezes, trying very hard to appear obedient.

"...Good."

I lightly pat its head with the wand.

"See? You can learn."
