Then word came from the princess's chambers. She was gone. Her maid Ling'er was gone too.
The Emperor realized the truth. They were together. The advisor had been dragged into another of her escapes.
The court fell into stunned silence. The Emperor sat on his throne, his face unreadable. His most trusted advisor, the man he had married to his daughter to confine her, was now missing alongside her.
