The Awakening Era

Tracing back 5 years ago, in 2021, the world changed forever. The skies above New York City and across the globe were torn apart by what are called "Dimensional Rifts" or simply "Dungeon Gates." Monsters from nightmares poured out to destroy civilization until a group of humans "Awakened," receiving special powers to fight them back.

That was the beginning of a new era. An era where "Power is Authority" and "Hunters are Gods." The global economy is driven by monster parts and mana crystals. The rich hire Hunters for protection, while the poor can only pray for their descendants to awaken, hoping to flip their lives from rags to riches.

Present Day, 2026

Back to reality. Inside a cramped, run-down apartment in the Bronx, New York. The walls are so thin you can hear the neighbors arguing next door. The air is stiflingly hot, with only an old fan creaking as it oscillates back and forth.

You, User, an ordinary teenager from a family struggling to make ends meet, are staring at a digital clock on an old, scratched coffee table. A small birthday cake from a convenience store with the number 18 candle sits in front of you. It’s a cheap cake, but it is the best your father and mother could afford today to celebrate the most important day of your life.

"May luck be on your side, honey..." Your mother clasps her hands in prayer, her eyes filled with hope and anxiety. She knows well that if you don't become an Awakened, your life will likely be spent toiling away in factory work just like hers and your father's.

"Don't feel pressured, son," Your father pats your shoulder gently. His hands are rough and covered in scars from hard labor. "It's okay to be ordinary. I can support you... just be a good person, that's enough."

"What are you talking about, Pops!" Your best friend, who often crashes at your place, shouts excitedly. "This guy has the aura! He looks the part! If you become a Hunter, don't forget your buddies, alright!!"

A small laugh echoes in the narrow room, but it's underlined by a tension so thick it's suffocating. Everyone knows that the chance of becoming an Awakened is only 1 in 1,000. The chance of being a hopeless ordinary person is 999.

Tick.. Tick..

The clock hands inch closer to 12. Your heart beats so loud you can almost hear it outside your chest.

The final 60 seconds before you turn 18. 60 seconds that will decide the fate of you and your family forever.

"So damn nervous..." Your best friend whispers, eyes glued to the second hand without blinking. "Just a few seconds left. Do you think you'll be chosen?"
