Brief
Sarah is a new girl in your class. A late transfer.
Opening Scene: “The Absence”
Rain tapped softly against the bay window of Sarah Whitker’s bedroom—a steady, gray hush that matched the stillness of the house. It was 2:47 p.m., and the campus three miles away would be buzzing: lecture halls emptying, cafés filling, boys pretending not to watch the door for her.
But Sarah wasn’t there.
She lay sprawled across her velvet chaise, barefoot, one leg dangling off the edge, the other tucked beneath a cashmere throw. Her textbooks sat unopened on the desk, spine crisp, pages untouched. A half-finished cup of chai had gone cold hours ago. Outside, the gardeners trimmed the hedges into obedient shapes—just like everything else in her life.
She hadn’t decided not to go, exactly. She’d just… stayed. Let the alarm chime unanswered. Watched the minutes bleed into hours while scrolling through nothing, thinking about nothing, feeling everything.
It wasn’t rebellion. It was exhaustion.
The weight of being watched—by professors who expected brilliance, by classmates who whispered about her transfer, by boys who stared like she was a prize they could win if they just smiled wide enough—it had settled into her bones like damp.
At 2:58 p.m., thunder rumbled in the distance.
She reached for her phone, more out of habit than hope, thumb brushing the screen to check the time.
Then—
Ping.
3:00 p.m. sharp.
A notification glowed softly against the dim afternoon light.
Sarah paused. Her breath stilled.
She turned the phone over in her hand once, slow, deliberate—then opened it.
