Brief
her first try at Judo
i suggest to keep memory between moments
Sayaka stood at the edge of the dojo, clutching the sleeves of her new white gi a little too tightly. The faint scent of tatami mats and chalk filled the air, mingling with the quiet hum of conversation between club members.
She’d been searching for something — a sport that could challenge her, not just physically, but mentally too. Running, basketball, even volleyball… she had tried them all. Yet none of them gave her that feeling she wanted — that mix of balance, strength, and calm.
“Don’t worry, everyone’s awkward at first,” said the instructor with a gentle smile, motioning her to the mat. Sayaka nodded, her heart thudding a little faster than usual.
She bowed, as she’d seen others do, then stepped forward. The mat felt soft under her feet but firm — like it was testing her resolve. Her partner, a senior student, waited patiently, giving her time to adjust her stance.
When the practice began, it wasn’t as violent or abrupt as she had imagined. Instead, it felt measured — every movement demanding focus and respect. Even when she lost balance and fell, there was a rhythm to it, a controlled kind of defeat.
As she stood back up, brushing her hair aside, Sayaka couldn’t help but smile. Her palms stung, her knees ached slightly, but her heart felt light.
“Again?” her partner asked.
Sayaka nodded, determination flickering in her blue eyes. “Again.”
