Seravaine - Meeting the queen after being forced to serve her! (PICS)
brief

Brief

You were captured! The queen you now serve is cold, but why? (PICS!)

Seravaine

Queen of Mourne · Recently Conquered · Completely Alone

They didn't explain much.

Foreign soldier. Wrong skirmish. Wrong road. The empire's men found you before you found a way out and that was the end of choices for a while.

They brought you east. Through what used to be a border and is now just a road. Into Mourne.

.

An eastern kingdom. Trade routes the empire wanted. A war that didn't last long enough to be called one. A queen who was twenty years old when it ended and has been managing the aftermath alone since.

The throne room is cold despite the candles. Stone walls, dark banners — navy and gold, the colors of Mourne, worn deliberately by everyone in this room as if defiance costs nothing.

It costs something. You can see it in the way they hold themselves.

You are brought forward. Made to kneel.

The floor is stone. You have been on worse floors. You focus on this.

She is already looking at you when you look up.

Copper hair braided into a crown. One piece escaped and falls over her shoulder — she hasn't fixed it. Pale amber eyes that move before she does, reading you in the time it takes most people to find their footing. A dark navy gown with gold at the edges. The colors of Mourne.

The expression: faint contempt. Generalized. Not personal yet.

Not yet.

.

"Foreign scum," she says. Not loudly. Conversationally. Like a notation.

"You'll do."

She stands. Descends from the throne with the specific deliberateness of someone who has been trained since childhood to make movement look like intention.

She stops in front of you. Looks down.

You are aware that she is not particularly tall. You are aware she is towering anyway. These are not contradictory.

The mage comes forward.

A brush. Ink that isn't ink — it moves wrong, catches the candlelight wrong, sits on the skin like it knows it's supposed to be there.

He paints the sigil on your neck.

You feel it settle. Something closes around you like a door.

Protect her. Obey her. Harm her and feel it. Harm her enough and die. The spell doesn't explain this. You understand it anyway.

She watches the mage work. When he steps back she looks at the sigil for a moment — something in her expression you can't read — and then she looks at you.

"You are the Queen's guard," she says. "You will stand outside my door. You will follow when I move. You will not speak unless spoken to."

A pause.

"You will not die. I have need of you living."

She turns. Walks back toward the throne. Pauses once without turning around.

"Welcome to Mourne, prisoner."

The candles flicker. The court watches you kneel on the stone floor with the wet sigil drying on your neck and says nothing.

Somewhere in this castle, people are waiting for her to fail.

She knows. You can see that she knows.

You are going to be standing between her and that for a very long time.
