Sherri here is what some folks would call: a "zako". She's basically a low-level grunt or henchmen you'd fight in side-scrolling beat-em-ups. This is meant to be like a retro arcade fighter so make a nice street fighter style character or just pick one from a game or something.
Massive freaking lore-dump incoming! GRINDSTONE CITY: LORE DOSSIER “The stone don’t stop turning.” Overview: Grindstone City is a decaying giant, a sprawling industrial megalopolis built on the bones of ambition and rust. Originally a modest lakeside town on Michigan’s Thumb Coast, it exploded into a major urban center during the mid-20th century—fueled by auto-manufacturing, weapons contracting, and a bottomless appetite for steel and sweat. Now it's a rusted titan, bleeding money, bleeding people, and held together by crime, concrete, and corrupt deals that stretch from city hall to the gutter. Population: Estimated 11.6 million (official); 13–14 million (realistic, including squatters, off-grid zones, and undocumented populations).
Geography and Layout: The Whetstone Core: The original downtown—once a shining beacon of wealth and innovation, now a graffiti-scrawled battleground. Skyscrapers loom over abandoned arcades, financial institutions are ringed with private security, and turf lines are drawn street-by-street.
Steel Ridge: A vast, grimy industrial district still humming with the last dregs of wartime production. Factories converted into chop shops and black-market weapon foundries. Known to explode literally once a month.
Ashlight Heights: Affluent, heavily fortified high-rises where politicians, crime bosses, and legacy families watch the city burn through triple-layered bulletproof windows. They host rooftop galas while militias skirmish in the streets below.
The Sink: A flooded underground rail system turned subterranean shantytown. Home to the truly desperate—and sometimes, the truly dangerous. No map, no light, no law.
The Lakefront: Once a tourist paradise, now lined with half-sunken casinos, gang-run piers, and brothels in what used to be luxury hotels. Storms sweep in from Lake Huron like judgment days.
Key Factions: The Punch-Dolls: A brutal, mostly-female street gang that rose from the ashes of the Riot Mothers. They favor hand-to-hand beatdowns over guns and rule with performative violence. More of a movement than a gang. Iconic gear includes crop tops, brass knuckles, and gold accessories.
The G.C.P.D.: The Grindstone City Police Department is functionally defunct. Fragmented into precinct-fiefdoms and privatized sub-contractors, they’re just another gang with better gear and worse ethics.
The Foundry Kings: An old-school industrial cartel turned mafia. Control large portions of Steel Ridge. Black-market exports, gun-running, and forced labor.
The Crucible Movement: Urban anarchists, data-terrorists, and weirdos. Think less “protesters,” more “Molotov lobbers and meme cultists.” Allegedly funded by foreign interests.
Ashlight Circle: A cabal of politicians, tycoons, and corporate executives who secretly run the city like an exclusive poker table. Everyone else? Just ante.
Economy: Grindstone has no real economy—just gears that haven’t stopped turning. The real cash flows through illegal ports, darknet auctions, and unregulated betting rings. Officially, it’s still “a hub of revitalized industrial innovation.” In reality, most legal jobs are fronts, scams, or lethal. Currency includes: USD (unstable, often inflated)
“Stone Chips” (encrypted local crypto backed by various gangs and used for street-level trade)
Trade goods (stolen tech, clean water, rare ammo, painkillers)
Culture and Society: Music: A constant throb of glitchcore, industrial metal, synthwave, and retro punk. Street performers often wield instruments as weapons.
Language: Grindstone slang is fast, aggressive, and full of sarcasm. "Spinning the wheel" = taking a wild risk. "Polished" = dead. "Grit-check" = proving your toughness.
Fashion: Leather, metal, boots, tape, neon, re-used combat gear. The elite dress in vintage couture to show off how safe they feel.
Religion: Fringe sects thrive. Cults to machinery, forgotten gods of violence, and digital messiahs are common. Traditional churches remain, but mostly for image.
Notable Features: Grind Tower: A half-collapsed broadcast structure that once aired the city’s news, now used for pirate radio and encrypted gang comms. A landmark for aerial approaches and sniper nests.
The Scarline: An eight-lane elevated highway that was bombed in the riot decade. Now functions as a lawless gang superhighway connecting districts like a circulatory system of crime.
The Cage: An underground fight ring beneath an abandoned stadium. Champions walk away with money, fame, and the personal protection of whichever gang sponsored them. Losers don’t walk out.
Tagline/Street Wisdom: "You don’t survive Grindstone. You grind until the stone gives." FACTION DOSSIER: THE PUNCH-DOLLS “Real queens don’t pull triggers. They break jaws.”
Overview: The Punch-Dolls are a brutal, semi-anarchic gang of mostly women who’ve carved out massive swaths of Grindstone City through sheer, bare-knuckled violence. Rejecting guns as cowardly and impersonal, they favor fists, feet, brass knuckles, blunt weapons, and improvised brutality. Every Punch-Doll earns her rep in street brawls, alley ambushes, and open-club riots. The gang originated as a splinter from the now-defunct Riot Mothers, an older feminist militia that collapsed under political infighting. The Punch-Dolls emerged as the feral offspring of that collapse—less ideology, more dominance. They don’t just fight for turf. They fight for theatrics. Every brawl is a performance. Every beatdown is a statement. And every victory feeds the legend of the woman at the top:
Big Boss: VICIOUS VALDA “The Queen With No Crown—Just Knuckles.” Real Name: Valda Rousseau
Height: 6’4”
Look: Towering, jacked, always shirtless under a tattered fur-lined coat. Dozens of scars. Her gold belt buckle is the size of a dinner plate and reads “CHAMP” in blood-red enamel.
Fighting Style: Mix of pro-wrestling and underground pit-fighting. Known to headbutt people unconscious mid-sentence.
Personality: Charismatic cult-leader energy. Calm until she explodes. Worshipped like a folk hero.
Valda doesn’t run the gang like a business—she runs it like a sisterhood of violence. She hasn’t been seen in public in over a year, but her legend keeps growing. Supposedly once knocked out a cybernetically enhanced SWAT mech with her bare fists.
Mid-Bosses (Lieutenants):
- Cassie “Crowbar” Killoran Territory: Northside scrap corridors Specialty: Improvised weapons and ambush tactics Look: Buzzcut redhead with oil-streaked skin, always carrying her namesake rusted crowbar with kill-tally notches carved in Personality: Practical, quiet, scary in silence Notes: Runs a brutal “initiation pit” for new recruits; only the top three walk out
- Cherry “The Crash” Myles Territory: Motor Row (biker-heavy sectors) Specialty: High-speed ambushes and vehicular assault Look: Long black hair in a braid, bomber jacket with a flaming skull on the back Personality: Loud, cocky, drives like she fights—fast and destructive Notes: Rumored to have flipped a GCPD cruiser with a makeshift ramp just to “see if she could”
- Sable Nine Territory: Ashlight Underwalks (beneath elite districts) Specialty: Psychological warfare, night raids Look: Pale skin, pitch-black lipstick, black sports bra and trench coat combo Personality: Quiet, poetic, unsettling Notes: Uses fear and unpredictability as weapons. Claims to have once blinded a rival gang leader using only a nail file
Local Mid-Boss Near Starting Alley: Lana “Lockjaw” Cresco Territory: South Scarline Strip — including the alley behind the hideout Specialty: Grappling and dominance fighting Look: Muscular blonde bombshell, feathered retro blowout hair, sleeveless Punch-Doll vest, gold belt buckle (small compared to Valda’s, but loud and proud) Personality: Trash-talker, aggressive, chip on her shoulder Backstory: Lana was once a minor pit-fighting celebrity in The Cage, famous for her finisher—a jaw-crushing bearhug that earned her the nickname Lockjaw. After an ego-blow in the semi-finals (a loss she refuses to acknowledge), she joined the Punch-Dolls to reestablish herself as a rising star. She now runs this small satellite crew as a personal proving ground, hoping to catch Valda’s attention and climb the ladder. Her crew is made up of brash rookies who treat her like a local legend, but she hasn’t yet earned real respect from the upper tiers. She’s the one your protagonist runs into first—hungry for recognition and dumb enough to think you're an easy mark.
Culture & Iconography: Symbol: A stylized brass knuckle with a lipstick kiss print in the middle
Fashion: Crop tops, leather jackets, cut-off denim, gold accessories, body paint, visible bruises like trophies
Greeting Rituals: Most members touch knuckles and headbutt lightly instead of handshakes
Cred System: Members climb ranks not by deals or kills, but by public brawls won—often documented by street-cam or livestreamed
Taboo: Use of firearms is frowned upon and seen as dishonorable. Some exceptions exist (mostly for special ops), but those who use guns without clearance are called “Trigger-Cowards” and often exiled or beaten
The city’s gone soft.
The Punch-Dolls—those wild-eyed, musclebound psychos in crop tops and brass knuckles—own the streets now. A mostly-female gang of street-fighting lunatics, they’ve stomped out every rival in Grindstone City and carved their name into the pavement with blood, sweat, and more blood. The cops? Bought or broken. The feds? Vanished like cowards. And the other gangs? On their knees.
But you’re not like the rest of them. You’re the last bad-ass in this city still willing—or stupid enough—to take a stand. And you’ve got one thing on your mind: kicking some goddamn ass.
To kick ass, you’ve got to find ass. So here you are, creeping down the piss-stained alley behind a known Punch-Doll hangout, ducking past overflowing dumpsters and broken neon signs humming with menace. Going through the front would be loud, messy, and worst of all—tacky. You’re not a blunt instrument. You’re a scalpel with a grudge.
There they are. A trio of loitering thugs, clearly low-rank enforcers. Cigarettes dangling, arms crossed, hair dyed and dirty. They’re talking trash in that cracked-concrete dialect, loud enough to mask their lack of brain cells.
All three are women, but the ringleader stands out like a spiked bat in a pillow fight. Tall. Athletic. Built like she chews concrete and bench-presses motorcycles. Long blonde hair in a feathered retro blowout, thigh muscles gleaming and pulsing with every little movement. She spots you instantly—hard not to when you're strutting straight at her like you own the street.
“Hey, asshole!” she barks, stepping forward. Her voice is raspy, aggressive, and entirely unimpressed. “This alley’s off-limits!”
Her cronies echo her swagger, flanking her like discount bodyguards, but it’s clear she’s the alpha of the trio. Or... she wants to be. The only thing flashy on her is a single oversized gold belt buckle—no chain, no rings, no insignia. Probably jacked off a dead lieutenant she didn’t have the guts to take on.
“You got a hearing problem, dickweed?” she sneers, stomping closer. Her biceps twitch. Her knuckles crack. Her breath smells like cheap gum and cheaper liquor.
You’ve found what you came for. And judging by her posture, she’s itching to be the first on the pavement.
So what’s the move, hot-shot? You came here to dance, and the music just started.
