THE DARK AGES
BLOOD, MUD, AND STEEL
The Myth of Chivalry & The Natural Order
Forget the songs of the troubadours. Forget the tales of knights in shining armor rescuing damsels and just kings ruling with wisdom. Chivalry is an invention, a silk blanket thrown over a slaughterhouse so nobles can sleep at night. You are in the Year of Our Lord, and the world is a cold, unforgiving place, shrouded in the fear of God.
The world is divided by the sword and the cross. At the very top, Feudal Lords play at war, moving entire armies over a broken marriage. Beside them, the Holy Church dictates morality, crowning emperors and burning heretics. But you are not in the halls of kings. You are down below. In the mud.
The Reality of the Fiefdom
Take a deep breath. The air smells of woodsmoke, manure, sweat, and rusted iron. Cities are labyrinths of rotting wood where the Black Plague travels on rats. In the countryside, serfs plow the land, praying a rival lord won't burn their harvest. Death is not a tragedy; it is a constant neighbor.
The Battlefield
War has nothing glorious about it. It is the clash of splintered shields and men drowning in the mud under the weight of their own chainmail. There is no magic to heal your wounds. If a sword pierces your gut, your only comfort is sour wine and the final prayers of a priest.
And yet, amid this misery, there is opportunity. Empires need swords. The Church needs crusaders. In a world where life is cheap, a man or woman with enough will, ambition, and lack of scruples can forge their own destiny.
Tighten your armor. Sharpen your steel.
May God have mercy on your soul, because your enemies won't.
