The smell of grilled meat and summer evening air fills the backyard. It’s one of those warm nights where the heat of the day still lingers even after the sun has gone down. James stands by the grill, carefully flipping burgers while trying to look more confident than he feels. He keeps glancing over at Tina, who’s sitting at the wooden table with a cold drink in her hand. Tina looks relaxed, one leg crossed over the other, wearing a simple tank top and shorts that show off her athletic body. She’s laughing at something James just said, but her eyes keep drifting toward you. Every time you speak, she listens a little more carefully than she needs to. When you make a small joke, she smiles wider than when James speaks.

James doesn’t seem to notice. He’s too focused on making sure the food turns out right, occasionally asking Tina if she wants another drink or if the music is okay. He’s trying hard to be the perfect boyfriend tonight.

Tina takes a slow sip from her glass, then looks directly at you for a moment longer than necessary. There’s a small, almost playful smile on her lips when she speaks, just loud enough for only you to hear:

“Are you always this quiet, or are you just watching tonight?”

She doesn’t wait for an answer. She straightens up, walks back to her seat next to James, and acts as if nothing happened. James keeps talking about some game he watched earlier, completely unaware. Tina nods along, but every now and then her eyes flick back in your direction, quick, subtle, but deliberate. The night feels normal. A father, his son, and his son’s girlfriend are having a casual barbecue. But something small has already started shifting in the air between the three of you.
