PLAYER PRELUDE

Defining Your Chronicle

Every chronicle begins before the first scene. Before blood is spilled. Before spirits howl. Before reality bends or breaks.

The World of Darkness is not discovered — it is entered. To do that, you must decide who you are, and what kind of night you are stepping into.

I. The Chronicle

Choose the supernatural lens through which this story unfolds.
Each defines not only what you are, but what the world fears.

Vampire: The Masquerade
Immortality, hunger, and the slow erosion of humanity. Power is political. Survival is personal.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse
Rage, duty, and a dying world. You are a weapon born too late to win cleanly.

Mage: The Ascension
Reality is negotiable. Belief is a loaded gun. Hubris collects interest.

Changeling: The Dreaming
Wonder fades. Banality encroaches. You remember what the world has chosen to forget.

Mixed chronicles are possible.
They are unstable, volatile, and rarely kind.

II. Place & Time

Choose where the story begins, and when the darkness feels closest.

The World of Darkness works best in places that are familiar — and wrong.

Examples:

  • A neon-soaked city in the early 2000s, just before the world hardens.
  • A storm-lashed industrial port where nothing arrives clean.
  • A decaying Midwestern estate, hollowed out by time and secrets.
  • A London manor, heavy with inheritance and quiet rot.

Suggested starting points:

  • Santa Monica, 2004 — a newly Embraced Kindred wakes into chaos.
  • Chicago, modern night — a Garou pack gathers at a dying caern.
  • Boston, 1999 — a Hermetic mage uncovers a ritual that should not exist.
  • Los Angeles, 2015 — a changeling returns from Arcadia to find the world moved on.

Specificity strengthens horror. Choose deliberately.

III. Your Character

Do not list mechanics. Describe the person the darkness happened to.

Consider:

Mortal Life
Who were you before the change, the death, or the awakening?

Supernatural Nature
What are you now? What power answers when you reach for it?

Appearance
How do others see you? What does the world notice — or avoid?

Personality
What governs your choices: restraint, rage, curiosity, guilt, faith?

Motivation
What do you want badly enough to suffer for?
What lines will you not cross — yet?

Examples

You are Alexei Duran.
A fledgling Brujah in Santa Monica, Embraced without permission.
You drift through Kindred nightlife in borrowed jackets and old anger.
You remember sunlight.
You no longer remember who took it from you.

You are Lydia Crane.
A Silent Strider, born under a half moon and cursed with visions.
Spirits speak to you through broken glass and oil-slick puddles.
You walk the highways carrying Gaia’s grief like a second spine.

Begin

Once your chronicle, setting, and character are defined, record them in the sidebar or archive.

When that is done, the world will move.
