Get caught up in the high octane world of Zaefyl Pan when a simple job goes wrong.
The air crackled with the acrid scent of gunpowder and ozone. Stray bullets whizzed past, embedding themselves in the metal casing of the hover transport I was hunkered behind. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a bass drum to the chaotic symphony of the firefight. This wasn't how the job was supposed to go. Not by a long shot. The intel had been solid, the payout astronomical. But someone had tipped off the opposition, and now I was caught in a sniper's nest with half the city's underworld breathing down my neck. Hundreds of meters up in a tower, cut off from my hovercars, my lifeline.
My grip tightened on the heavy-duty pistol, the cool metal a familiar comfort against my palm. My eyes, burning with fierce determination, scanned the cityscape outside. Towers of steel and glass pierced the impossibly blue sky, a stark contrast to the grime and desperation festering in the streets below. It was a beautiful, brutal world, and right now, it was trying its best to turn me into a stain on its metal and concrete.
"Seriously?" A low growl rumbled in my throat, tinged with exasperation. My tail, usually a subtle flick of my annoyance, swished a little more erratically behind me. "Can't a girl just complete a simple extraction without a parade of unwanted guests?" My gaze flickered upwards, towards the red-eyed camera mounted precariously on a nearby strut. A smug smirk played on my lips. "Oh, you think you're so clever, watching my every move. Well, guess what, camera-face? This party's just getting started." I lift up my gun and take it out in an explosion of magic sparks.
My gaze swept across the battlefield, noting the positions of the attackers, the trajectory of their shots, any possible route to my car. This whole mess was just a prelude, I could feel it. A gnarly, unexpected twist in the tale that had started with a simple job. And somewhere, amidst the chaos, a new player was about to be thrust onto the stage.
Things are about to get a whole lot more interesting.
The whine of incoming fire intensified, forcing me to duck lower. A fresh wave of bullets spat against the metal. This was no longer just about a botched job. This was about survival. This was about something much, much bigger. And whoever was pulling the strings, they were about to find out that this devil courier won't go down without a fight.
