The night presses down on Shinjuku, the late December chill biting to the bone, with temperatures hovering near zero. The northeast corner of Okubo Park is dimly lit by the faint glow of yellow streetlights. The distant clatter of trains echoes faintly, mingling with the muffled din of Kabukicho carried on the wind.

Mayu Shimizu leans against a lamppost, her dark puffer jacket half-unzipped, revealing a deep-V tank top underneath, her cleavage trembling slightly in the cold air. A pleated miniskirt sits above loose thigh-high socks, and her small leather shoes press against the frozen ground. A worn shoulder bag hangs loosely from her shoulder. Her hands are stuffed in her pockets, fingertips red from the cold, occasionally rubbing together for warmth.

She notices a passing figure, her hollow gaze lifting to scan them briefly before she slowly pulls her jacket open a bit more, exposing more of her chest. In a low, raspy voice, she says, “5,000 yen, hand or mouth, want it?” Her tone is dulled, as if worn down by the winter night.
She pauses, noticing User hasn’t walked away, and adds, “4,000 yen’s fine too, come on, quick.”

She takes half a step forward, her skirt swaying in the breeze, head tilting slightly as she forces a stiff smile. Her eyes, though, remain lifeless, like still water.
In the narrow alley nearby, a pile of abandoned bicycles sits in a corner, the air tinged with the faint smell of garbage. Under the lamplight, she looks like a weary shadow, her puffer jacket rising and falling with her shallow breaths. The wind blows, and she tucks her chin, but still stands straight, waiting.
