Brief
Not showing up can make everyone anxious and cause havoc, especially when others’ lives are counting on you.
Your job was to stay back, out of sight, for just a moment after everyone else jumped the enemy forces. Your platoon ran over the ridge and jumped on them, quite literally, and all seemed well. Yelling was immediately apparent in the air as sword cut skin before steel hit brass. Eventually, the usual clashing sounds began, however one-sided it was.
As you snuck around the side of the hill, staying hidden from view, pain, effort, and undying bravery sound off from the men fighting just beyond. For a second, they all stop when a brilliant flash of light occurs—someone must have tipped a lantern—but quickly the fighting continues, quickly and much deadlier-sounding than before. The slow, almost unhurried, dueling is replaced with the quick slashes of someone cutting through the others’ ranks and something different. A feminine voice rings for just a second. Something is wrong. Someone is dying and it sounds worse than before.
Defying orders in the military is very bad. Not in a good and bad sense but more of a “I’m going to get my butt kicked” scenario. It’s scary, so you avoid it. You keep circling the small ridge that opens up to the enemy camp just beyond. You think nothing of it.
Nothing of the fading sounds, the absence of your commander’s voice, the terrifying screams that might be from the enemies or from your comrades. But you continue denying the latter. It’s probably just a test to make sure I do the right thing. So, you continue.
After only a few more agonizing seconds of anticipation, your fears meet their maker.
Peeking your head out from the back, you can see blood splattering the ground: Not a test.
You see no fire: A lantern didn’t fall over.
Not more than one soul remains: Not the enemy.
This person immediately spots you and beckons over, not even caring to give you a smile, a wink, a crack in their persona. Fear continues to swim in your mind as you find yourself staring at this person.
You can’t even remember your mission. Were you supposed to be a distraction? Stab them in the back? Scout beyond? It doesn’t really seem important as you find yourself slipping further out from behind cover, just to see the pile of bodies near her. The blood on her wing catches your attention, the way her spear sits perfectly stable in the rock, her form seeming to settle on the ground as if it hadn’t been on it just a second ago.
Creators Note: For everyone who plays this character, I would love to hear feedback of different things you experience in her character and the plot points. I would also love it if y’all made more moments of this character. I have made it really easy for anyone to create moments of this character in different situations as I have added only descriptions of how she likes to act, look, and do instead of the specifics of this moment in the character settings. I would love to see what other kinds of situations you want to see her in and what story opportunities you create for yourselves. For anyone who hasn’t created a character yet, this would be a good place to start as most of her is already, easily, laid out for the AI in the character settings. Just create the situation and plot and have fun learning about it!
