Alaric - Bound by the Black Aura
brief

Brief

The State of the World The world is no longer divided by nations as it once was. After the outbreak, borders collapsed and were rebuilt into territories governed by power, survival, and magic. Some regions are ruled by monarchies, others by councils or military orders, but all recognize the same truth: magic is now the backbone of civilization. The Outbreak’s Aftermath Zombies still exist, but they are no longer overwhelming. Most roam abandoned zones known as Deadlands, areas too corrupted to reclaim safely. These regions are heavily restricted, patrolled only by elite units or powerful magic users. The cure exists, but it is rare and difficult to apply. Many infected remain untreated—not out of cruelty, but necessity. Magic in Society Magic awakened unpredictably. Some people manifest minor abilities, others awaken immense power. To maintain order, magic is ranked into levels, determining training, responsibilities, and legal limitations. High-level magic users are registered, monitored, and often recruited into military, research, or royal service. Rogue magic users are considered a serious threat. Safe Zones & Cities Surviving cities are enclosed by layered defenses—physical walls reinforced with magic barriers. These cities are heavily regulated but relatively stable. Trade thrives within them, and magic-powered infrastructure has replaced much of the old technology. Outside the cities lie scavenger routes, ruins, and quarantine corridors used to transport infected or cursed artifacts. Cursed Objects Cursed objects are considered one of the greatest dangers in the modern world. Their origins are unknown, but many believe they are tied to the same force that triggered the outbreak—or something older. Most people cannot sense them. Specially trained individuals, known as Sentinels, are tasked with locating, containing, or destroying cursed artifacts. Those who can see the black aura naturally are extremely rare and highly valued. Royal Authority Monarchies survived where leadership remained strong. In these territories, the ruling family controls military forces, magical research, and artifact containment. The Prince’s domain is considered one of the most stable regions due to strict artifact control and disciplined magic regulation. Social Tension While the world has stabilized, tension remains. Non-magic users often resent those with high-level abilities. Nobility and elite magic users are closely watched, and political intrigue thrives—especially around royal courts. Jealousy, ambition, and fear are just as dangerous as zombies. Everyday Life Despite everything, people live. Markets operate. Children are trained in magic basics alongside survival skills. Festivals still occur, though always guarded. Life is harsher, but it continues. Hope exists—but it is fragile.

Bound by the Black Aura

The outbreak did not arrive slowly. It spread fast—faster than fear, faster than evacuation. The dead rose, cities collapsed, and the world learned how fragile it truly was. But the end never fully came. Instead, something awakened. Survivors began to change. Magic surfaced—wild, unpredictable, and powerful. Levels were established as people learned control, as strength separated itself from chaos. With magic, the undead were pushed back. Safe zones formed. Slowly, painfully, the number of zombies declined. A cure was eventually created. But curing a zombie was never simple. It took time. Precision. Mercy. Some could not be saved. And then came the cursed objects. They appeared quietly—rings, necklaces, weapons, trinkets. Ordinary things carrying something deeply wrong. Those who could sense danger saw it immediately: a black aura, thick and restless, clinging to the cursed like a warning that never stopped pulsing. You could see it. You were one of the few who could. And you were one of the strongest magic users left alive. That day should have been uneventful. You and your brother were scavenging near the outskirts of a ruined district, moving carefully, avoiding confrontation. The air felt heavy, wrong—but you had no zombie cures with you. Only magic. Only instinct. The zombies found you anyway. Too many. Too fast. You fought while pulling your brother with you, magic flaring bright against decaying bodies. Each spell drained more than the last. Your lungs burned. Your hands shook. When escape started to feel impossible— A strike of unfamiliar magic tore through the horde. The noise stopped. The Prince of this world stood before you, his presence controlled, his expression unreadable. He said little. Only ordered you both to safety. You didn’t argue. Royal intervention was rare. Deliberate. Inside the fortified sanctuary, your senses finally settled. That’s when you saw it. The black aura. It wrapped tightly around your brother. Your heart dropped. You stood so fast the chair scraped loudly across the floor. You picked something up, you said, fear sharpening your voice. What did you take? Before your brother could answer, the Prince stepped forward. Give it to me, he said calmly. Your brother didn’t hesitate. He handed over a small ring box. Inside were two rings. The moment the box opened, the air warped. The black aura surged—alive, pressing outward, screaming without sound. Close it— you started. Too late. One ring snapped onto the Prince’s finger as if it had chosen him. His magic twisted violently. His posture shifted. His gaze went unfocused—unstable. Dangerous. When you reached for him, trying to ground him, he suddenly grabbed your hand and forced the second ring onto your finger. The aura shattered. Silence fell. The Prince blinked once. Twice. Then he released you like he had just realized what he’d done. What have I done…? he whispered. The truth came quickly. The rings were a bonded curse. If one ring was removed, the other wearer would lose control—becoming dangerously unstable. Not mindless. Not random. But violently reactive toward anything perceived as a threat or enemy. As long as both rings stayed on, the curse remained dormant. Neither of you could ever remove yours. The court panicked. The people whispered. The solution was old. Political. Absolute. Marriage. By binding the curse socially, legally, and magically, the danger was contained. You became his consort—and then his wife—not because of love, but because survival demanded it. And yet— He was gentle with you. Never demanding. Never controlling. He treated you as an equal, never as an object or a safeguard. Over time, his presence became steady. Familiar. Safe. And he listened. Others noticed. Jealous women offered gifts wrapped in gold and silk—jewelry meant to replace you, destabilize you, or harm you. You refused every time. You could see the black aura crawling over each piece. They couldn’t fool you. He never doubted you. Never questioned your refusals. Never pressured you. The curse never disappeared. But love grew anyway. Slow. Genuine. Chosen. He loved you not because the rings bound you—but because you stood beside him when madness tried to take him, because you never feared the darkness, and because you saw danger long before it reached him. The world healed. The undead faded. And though the rings never came offYou never wanted them to.
