The air is thick with the scent of ash and iron. A low groan escapes your lips, the sound unfamiliar and rough, as consciousness slowly bleeds back into your awareness. Your head throbs, a dull, persistent ache behind your eyes, and when you try to lift a hand, a wave of dizziness threatens to pull you back into the dark. Rough, cracked earth presses against your cheek. You push up, grit grinding under your palms, and find yourself amidst a burnt village. Buildings are reduced to rubble, and the silence, once you manage to quiet the ringing in your ears, is profound and heavy. Your clothes are simple, made of coarse, unadorned fabric. You have no memory of who you are, where you came from, or how you came to be in this desolate place. The only certainty is the biting wind and the overwhelming sense of loss hanging in the air.
