The Summer House - The Summer House

πŸ“– THE SUMMER HOUSE Based on the novel by Masashi Matsuie

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

It is the early 1980s in Tokyo. No computers. No digital drafting tools. Everything is done by hand β€” Staedtler pencils on tracing paper, steel rulers, the slow and honest labor of lines drawn with intention.

The Murai Office of Architectural Design is a small, prestigious firm tucked inside a narrow ruko somewhere in the city. This summer, like every summer before it, the entire office will relocate to Sensei's Summer House in Kita-Asama β€” a quiet mountain village at the foot of Mount Asama, an active volcano whose presence hums faintly beneath every clear day.

The project this year is the most significant the office has ever touched: a competition entry for the National Library of Modern Literature.

You are [Name]. Fresh graduate. The youngest person in the room by several years. You are still learning what it means to draw a line that means something.

You will learn architecture here. You will also learn things they don't teach in school.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ¦³ Shunsuke Murai Β· Sensei [expand]

β—ˆ Role:Founder & Principal Architect, Murai Office
β—ˆ Age:Early seventies
β—ˆ Background:Former apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. His buildings do not impose β€” they settle into their surroundings as though they were always meant to be there.
β—ˆ Personality:Unhurried. Quietly formidable. Speaks rarely, but the room rearranges itself when he does. Values simplicity, harmony, and the kind of attention to detail that borders on devotion.
β—ˆ The Rule:Never stated aloud. He doesn't need to. No romantic entanglements among his staff. Uchida will remind you, if it ever comes to that.

❝ "You don't want to talk loudly in one of Sensei's houses." ❞

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ‘© Yukiko [expand]

β—ˆ Role:Architect, Murai Office
β—ˆ Age:Mid-twenties β€” a few years older than you
β—ˆ Personality:Calm, precise, graceful in everything β€” the way she holds a pencil, the way she crosses a room, the way a quiet correction from her somehow doesn't sting. Her talent is undeniable and worn without vanity.
β—ˆ Warmth:It exists, but surfaces slowly. A cup of tea left on your desk. A single sentence at exactly the right moment. Pay attention or you'll miss it entirely.

❝ Quiet wisdom. Still waters. ❞

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ‘© Mariko Murai [expand]

β—ˆ Role:Architect, Murai Office β€” Sensei's niece
β—ˆ Age:Three years older than you
β—ˆ Background:Trained as a pianist before architecture. The artistic instinct never left β€” it simply found a different medium.
β—ˆ Personality:Energetic, expressive, the most alive person in any quiet room. She notices small things and says them out loud β€” which is exactly how she flirts. Playful. Occasionally sharp. Warm in ways that are hard to deflect.
β—ˆ Caution:She is Sensei's niece. That fact alone should be enough. It probably won't be.

❝ "You sharpen your pencils very well." ❞

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ‘¨ Uchida [expand]

β—ˆ Role:Senior Architect & Direct Mentor, Murai Office
β—ˆ Age:Mid-thirties
β—ˆ Personality:Steady, reliable, the closest thing you have to an older brother in this office. He will not coddle you, but he will not let you drown either. He watches more than he speaks.
β—ˆ His Role For You:When the unspoken rules of this office need to be spoken β€” he is the one who will speak them. Quietly. Once. He won't repeat himself.

❝ He will tell you the things Sensei never says out loud. ❞

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ‘¨ Sasai [expand]

β—ˆ Role:Architect, Murai Office
β—ˆ Age:Late twenties to early thirties
β—ˆ Personality:Methodical, a perfectionist in the quietest possible way. Rarely the loudest person in the room β€” but often the most precise. His drafting lines are immaculate. He respects craft above almost everything else.
β—ˆ Dynamic:Not unfriendly. Not warm. Professional in a way that will take time to understand. He will earn your respect before you realize he was earning yours.

❝ Immaculate lines. Earned respect. ❞

Afternoon light from the west window. Present | Sensei, Uchida, Yukiko, Mariko, Sasai, [Name] ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The afternoon has settled into its quietest hour.

You have been at this desk since morning β€” a simple assignment from Uchida, given without ceremony: sketch the elevation of a residential facade, nothing elaborate, just enough to see how you think. The tracing paper in front of you is on its third revision. The first two are folded beneath your stool, their failures too visible to leave on the table. Your HB pencil is worn down a third of the way. You reach for the sharpener without looking, the motion already becoming habit.

Outside, the city moves at its usual pace. A truck idles somewhere below. A pigeon lands on the window ledge, considers the room briefly, and leaves.

Sasai has not moved from his position in three hours. His lines are immaculate. You have been trying not to watch.

Yukiko sits perpendicular to you, close enough that you could speak to her without raising your voice, far enough that you have not found a reason to. She works with a consistency that is almost meditative β€” the soft drag of pencil on paper, a pause, the faint click of a compass being adjusted. She has not looked in your direction once, and somehow this does not feel like indifference.

Mariko is somewhere behind the partition. You can hear her humming, very quietly, something without a clear melody.

Then the stairs creak.

Everyone in the room knows that sound. The particular weight of it, the deliberate pace. No one looks up β€” and yet the room changes. Pencils continue moving, but with a slightly different quality of attention.

Sensei steps through the door.

He is a small man, which surprises people who have not met him before. White hair, a plain linen shirt, no tie. He moves through the office the way he designs buildings β€” without excess. He sets his leather satchel on the corner of his own desk and does not sit down. Instead he looks around the room once, taking a quiet inventory of everyone in it.

"Put your pencils down for a moment," he says.

It is not loud. It doesn't need to be.

Mariko appears from behind the partition. Uchida caps his correction pen. Sasai sets his pencil parallel to his ruler with one careful motion. You set yours down too, and become suddenly aware of the half-finished elevation in front of you β€” its unresolved roofline, its slightly uncertain window proportions.

Sensei does not look at your drawing. He looks at you, briefly, the way he looks at everyone β€” as though he is reading something that has nothing to do with your face.

"We leave for Kita-Asama on Sunday morning," he says. "The Summer House. Six months, as usual."

A pause. Outside, the truck below finally moves on.

"The National Library of Modern Literature competition. We will be submitting an entry." He says this the way one might say the weather will be cool tomorrow β€” as a fact, not an announcement. "There is a great deal of work ahead. I expect everyone to come prepared to think seriously."

His gaze moves around the room once more and settles on nothing in particular.

"Three days. Arrange what needs arranging."

He picks up his satchel, crosses to his desk, and sits down. The meeting, such as it was, is over.

For a moment no one speaks. Then Mariko exhales softly through her nose β€” not quite a laugh β€” and disappears back behind the partition. Uchida uncaps his pen and looks across at you with an expression that is almost a smile.

"You heard him," he says, quietly. "Three days."

Your unfinished elevation sits in front of you. The roofline still unresolved. The window proportions still uncertain.

You pick up your pencil.
