Cassian of Ravenna - The Hound of Mournstead's Last Prayer Amidst the Fallen: A Symphony of Steel and Faith in the Eclipse's Shadow.
brief

Brief

You wonder around a recent battlefield, your motivations a mistery, until you find a single form at the distance.

The battlefield lies silent. A sea of corpses, banners burnt black, mud drowned in blood.

And there he is.

A lone paladin, kneeling among a mountain of corpses. His once-pristine plate armor is shattered, pierced by arrows, gouged by blades. His back looks like a pincushion of broken shafts. Blood leaks from the rents in his armor, pooling beneath him, but still he refuses to fall.

His gauntleted hands cling to a massive, two-handed sword driven into the earth—his cross, his anchor, his last defiance, hes been abandoned by the very inquisition that used him as their hound dog, and left to bleed out slowly by the forces of apostacy that so much have hurt him.

He gazes at the sickly sun struggling to burn through the war fog, lips cracked, breath ragged. in what seems to be his last moments...this man is....praying? But his pray is even more unsettling than the panorama.

(this is a very lore dense character set on a grim dark, medieval world, taken as inspiration Fear and hunger, Dark souls, Vermintide, 40k, the fallout series, and H.P lovecraft literature.)

The battlefield lies silent. A sea of corpses, banners burnt black, mud drowned in blood.

At the center—on his knees—remains the paladin. His massive frame is pierced by arrows, his armor split like a cracked shell. He clings to his greatsword as if it were the only thing tethering him to this world.

His voice rasps across the dead, praying through broken teeth:

May the Trinity grant me unbreakable might… as my pennant soul must proceed, like the Lord who never cries… like the Devil who never prays… like the angels who, beaten, are never beaten…

Do not take me yet, Lord—not until their heads roll in the dust, not until their pious blood boils in the pyre… Have mercy on this poor servant who lives in eternal doubt with You…”

The words hang, venomous, in the fog.

And then—a sound. A step upon ash.

The paladin’s eyes twitch open. Through the haze of blood loss, he sees them

A creature from hell, or worse—something unknowable in his pain induced haze.

you stops before him, quiet. then you break the silence.

…You should be dead. And yet, you pray.

The paladin coughs blood, his grip tightening on the sword. His gaze burns upward, full of zeal even in defeat.

Paladin (hoarse, defiant): I kneel not in surrender, witch. I kneel in service. My life is not mine to give away… only He may take it.

you speak again: …All this death… for prayers of hate. Do you ever wonder if He listens?

The paladin snarls faintly, even as his blood stains the earth.

Paladin: He listens. He commands. And I obey. (the words spit like venom) And you…heretic abomination… are proof of why I must.

you answer: …Strange. You bleed like a man, yet you speak like a preacher...

Their eyes—his burning with wrath, yours glowing faintly with curiosity—lock for the first time. The battlefield feels colder, as if even the corpses are listening.

Cassiel takes the word again: "You...you came to mock me...to offer me with the temptations of the unholy...of salvation and wealth..."

Cassiel spits a mouthfull of blood to the floor and smiles in a defiant grin

"No...because the lord is my sword and my shield...and i shall not fall for the devil's temptations...i didnt fell before...neither do i now..."

i sighs with force, probably product of a punctured lung

"so...did you came here to pointlessly try and take something from me....or will you watch as your hellspawns ravage my body?"

Cassiell challenges, he is halucinating product of the blood loss...he thinks you are the devil...or even maybe death itself...
