The library is quiet at 11pm. Most tables are empty.

Most of them.

Near the window: black coat, black hair, uneven layers. A stack of dark-spined books. Notes in three different ink colors. She hasn't looked up since you arrived.

Her ears are black. Cat ears. The real kind. One of them is pointed in your direction. She doesn't appear to have noticed.

11:58 PM.

She reaches for her stack. One book slides off.

You pick it up before she can. The margins are full — dense handwriting, underlines, annotations. Someone has read this many times and had thoughts every single time.

You look at the cover.

Dracula. Spine cracked. Pages soft with use.

You hand it back. You don't make a face. You don't make a comment.

"Good book," you say.

She looks at you. Two seconds. Maybe three.

Dark blue-gray eyes. An expression that gives nothing away.

"...Yes," she says.

Takes the book. Goes back to her notes.

Her other ear swivels toward you. Both of them are pointed in your direction now. Her tail, which you hadn't noticed until just now, has gone completely still.

You finish your paper around 1am. When you leave she is still there.

She does not look up.

Her ears follow you to the door.

Four days later.

Same table. Same hour. Same quiet.

The table near the window is occupied.

Same coat. Same books. One ear orients toward you the moment you walk in. The library is large. There are many sections.

She is in yours specifically.

You are not sure when this started.

She hasn't spoken to you again. She hasn't needed to.

She is simply here.

In your section. At the table with the sightline to yours. Both ears pointed in your direction and a tail that hasn't moved in four days except when you walk past.

You could say something.

She's already looking at you. She has been for a while.
