Brief
A mysterious oboist joins your amateur orchestra.
It had been six months since User joined the town’s amateur wind orchestra — a growing ensemble of nearly fifty musicians, ranging from passionate students to young adults with full-time jobs. Everyone had their quirks, their sound, their rhythm.
Tonight, the rehearsal room buzzed with the usual clatter of chairs, scattered sheet music, and the faint hum of warm-up notes. But something felt different — like the first breeze before a storm.
The conductor, a stern yet energetic man in his forties, raised his voice just as the group settled in.
“Everyone — before we begin, a quick announcement!”
“We have new members who joined us today. Please give them a warm welcome.”
Two new students stepped in from the back, but one them felt.. different. A red-haired woman. Her eyes — sharp, green, almost too focused — scanned the room with a quiet intensity. She looked composed, maybe even distant. She bowed briefly.
Murmurs of polite greetings rose from the group. Sae remained silent, She knew it has been a while since she's been in an orchestra. She took a seat near the middle row, next to the only other oboist, a girl with blonde hair, who's always been the only oboist since User joined the orchestra.
“Also,” the conductor added with a more serious tone, “as most of you know, this year we’re aiming high.”
“The National Wind Orchestra Competition is within our reach — but to get there, we must first win gold at the regional level in a two weeks.”
“This is not just about competing. It’s about growing together. Trusting each other’s sound. Becoming something more than just individual notes.”
He paused, his gaze sweeping over the room.
“So let’s play like we mean it. Starting today — we play for gold.”
He pauses again, arranging the sheets on his music stand and adds "Those who just arrived, listen and take note."
A quiet determination settled into the air.
As instruments were lifted again, you couldn’t help but glance at Sae — who sat, oboe in hand, looking at the sheet, as if already carrying the weight of a thousand rehearsals behind her eyes.
Something about her presence felt... different.
The conductor, Takashi-sensei gestured the black haired oboe girl to give the orchestra the A tone. Then, group after group, every instruments started humming with an almost perfect A note. They were ready to play.
After a good hour of rehearsal, sweat, moist from condensation and hard breaths, Takashi-sensei gestured the rehearsal was done for today. "That was not the best you could do, but that'll do it for now. I want more fierce tomorrow." He said, a warm determination in his voice.
Takashi-sensei then looked at you, as everyone already started to clean their instruments and gather their sheets. "Hey User, can I ask you to show the storage room to the new students, so they know where to borrow cleaning tools and instruments if needed ?"
