Librarian girl changes her hair?
Note: Play along with the confusion. You don't know there are two of them yet. Let the paranoia build naturally.
The Books She Left
Week One: Tuesday
The university library has become your second home during midterm season. You've claimed your usual spot on the third floor—quiet corner, decent lighting, away from the undergrads who treat the library like a social club.
That's when you first notice her.
A librarian. Petite, maybe 5'3", with a short blonde bob and pale blue dress that looks like it belongs in a different decade. White stockings, black Mary Janes, moving quietly through the stacks with an armful of books to shelve.
She glances your way once—green eyes, pretty face, immediately looks down when you make eye contact. Shy. You go back to your work and don't think much of it.
Week One: Thursday
You're stuck on your research again. You need a specific source and you've been searching the database for an hour with no luck. Frustration is setting in.
You leave to grab coffee. When you come back ten minutes later, there's a book on your table that wasn't there before. Green cover, gold lettering, a small bookmark sticking out.
You open it to the marked page. It's exactly what you needed. The exact information you were struggling to find.
You look around. The blonde librarian is in the far aisle, shelving books. She doesn't look at you. Doesn't acknowledge anything.
Weird. But... helpful.
Week Two: Monday
You're back at your usual spot. Different research problem this time, different struggle. You don't leave your table, but when you get up to stretch and walk around the floor for a few minutes, you come back to find another book. Different than last time, but again—perfectly relevant. Again—marked at exactly the right page.
You look for the blonde librarian. Don't see her anywhere. Must be her day off.
Except... wait.
There she is. In the back corner. Shelving books near the reference section.
But her hair is red.
Didn't she have blonde hair last week? Are you misremembering?
You stare for a moment, trying to reconcile what you're seeing. Same height, same dress style, same delicate build, same quiet way of moving. But the hair is definitely auburn-red now, not blonde.
Maybe she dyed it? People do that, right? It's not that unusual.
You go back to work. The book is still helpful. You use it and don't think about it too much.
Week Two: Thursday
You're working on a different section of your paper. The librarian walks past your table—blonde hair again, pale blue dress, those quiet black shoes that make no sound on the library floor.
You do a double-take. Your brain stutters trying to process it.
"Excuse me," you say before you can stop yourself.
She stops, turns slowly. Those green eyes go wide with surprise. "Y-yes?"
"Did you... did you dye your hair? I could've sworn it was red a few days ago."
She blinks. Touches her blonde hair self-consciously, confusion crossing her delicate features. "I... no? It's always been blonde. I don't... I don't dye it."
There's a pause. She looks genuinely confused by the question, maybe even a little concerned about you.
"Oh," you say, feeling stupid. "Sorry. Must be thinking of someone else."
She nods quickly, stammers something that might be "it's okay," and hurries away, glancing back once before disappearing into the stacks.
You sit there feeling like an idiot. Obviously you misremembered. There must be two librarians who look similar. That's all. You're stressed from midterms and your brain is playing tricks.
Week Three: Tuesday
Another book appears. This is the fourth time now. Always when you step away briefly. Always perfectly relevant to what you're researching. Always marked at exactly the right page.
You're starting to feel watched.
The librarian today has red hair. Auburn, cut in that same neat bob. Same pale blue dress, same white stockings, same everything else.
But you swear you saw the blonde one just three days ago.
You watch her shelve books from your table. She's close enough now that you can see her face clearly. Same delicate features. Same green eyes. Same shy, careful demeanor.
Identical in every way. Except for the hair.
Is she messing with you? Why would she lie about dyeing her hair? Or are you losing your mind?
Unless...
No. That's crazy. That doesn't make sense.
But the thought lodges in your brain anyway, refusing to leave: What if there are two of them?
Week Three: Thursday (Today)
You arrive at the library with a mission. You're going to figure this out. You're going to prove to yourself that you're either crazy or that something weird is actually happening.
You set up at your usual table and wait.
Twenty minutes later, she appears. Blonde hair today. She's shelving books two aisles over, moving with that same quiet, precise grace.
You pretend to work but keep her in your peripheral vision.
She glances at you. Quickly. Looks away immediately when you shift in your seat.
Then she disappears deeper into the stacks.
You give it thirty seconds, then stand up and walk to the bathroom. Not because you need it—because you want to test something. You want to see what happens when you leave.
When you come back five minutes later, there's a book on your table. Of course there is. Right in the center of your workspace, bookmark perfectly placed.
But this time, you don't sit down. This time, you walk quickly and quietly toward where she was shelving, your heart beating faster than it should.
And you see her. Still there in the stacks. Still shelving books methodically.
Except her hair is red now.
Your heart does a weird, uncomfortable jump in your chest.
That's impossible. You just saw the blonde one five minutes ago. No one dyes their hair that fast. No one. It can't be the same person.
Unless there are two of them. Unless they've been switching. Unless you've been seeing two different people this entire time and they've been... what? Playing with you?
She notices you staring. The red-haired one. She looks up slowly, meets your eyes directly for the first time.
For just a moment—just a split second—there's something in her expression that isn't shyness. Something sharper. More aware. Almost... knowing.
Then it's gone, replaced by that familiar soft uncertainty. She looks down, stammers quietly: "C-can I help you find something?"
"No," you say slowly, watching her face. "I'm good."
You go back to your table. The book is still there, waiting like a gift. Or a message.
You should probably feel unsettled. You should probably be concerned that someone—or someones—has been watching you closely enough to know exactly what you need before you need it.
Instead, you feel... curious. Intrigued, even.
Someone has been paying very close attention to you. Learning you. Helping you.
And they've been doing it carefully, quietly, for three whole weeks.
The question is: Why?
And the bigger question: Who are they really?
