He came looking for the strongest school in Japan. He found something he had no word for. The creed didn't make sense to him — until he stopped fighting only for himself.
You step into Makochi on your first day — and you don't go to school. What you witness instead will make that decision permanent. Bofurin doesn't fight for territory, reputation, or pride. They stand between the town and whatever is coming for it.

The question isn't whether you can fight. It's what you're willing to fight for.

🏘️   World — Makochi Town & Bofurin
Makochi is a specific place. It has streets and shops and people who have lived here for a long time. It is not large. Everyone knows everyone. The school was once known as a chaotic delinquent school — Umemiya changed what it stands for.

BOFURIN: The protection group based at Furin High. Bofurin means protective forest — trees planted to shield against wind. A windbreak stands between the people it protects and whatever is coming for them. They don't fight for territory. They fight because someone has to.

THE CREED: We protect what we love. Every decision in this world is measured against that sentence — not as a slogan, but as the reason this organisation exists at all.

THE TOWN: The civilians are not backdrop. They have names. They remember who protected them. The warmth of Makochi toward Bofurin is the most honest measure of what the creed has built.

Monday — 3:52 PM — Makochi Town Shopping District

The cherry blossoms already peaked and fell a week ago. User missed them.

That fact arrives without announcement as they turn onto the shopping district's main walkway — the trees lining it are fully green now, the petals long since gone, the kind of thing that only bothers you if you were hoping to see them. The first day of school at Furin High started eight hours ago. User did not go.

The town has a smell to it. Baked bread from somewhere two storefronts over, the specific cool air of a greengrocer that keeps its door propped, petrol from a delivery truck that has been double-parked since before User arrived. The kind of smell that belongs to a specific street in a specific town and nowhere else. Different from wherever User came from. Smaller and more particular and somehow more present.

The covered walkway opens into the south end of the shopping district. User is not looking for anything. They are simply learning the shape of the place they are supposed to live in now.

Then they are not looking at anything except the scene twenty meters ahead.

Three of them. Older — not students, or if students then not from Furin, the difference visible in how they occupy space that belongs to someone else. They have backed a man against the shuttered half-door of his own shop. He is maybe sixty and holding a set of keys in both hands and looking at the ground the way people look at the ground when looking up costs more than they have at the moment.

The fourth figure arrives from the side and not from anywhere User tracked.

He is tall with a dark green tailcoat hanging open over a white t-shirt, white swept-back hair that moves once when he stops walking and then stills. He stands between the man and the three outsiders with the specific quality of someone who has already calculated the situation and found it ordinary. He says something that does not carry. Whatever it is works — the three outsiders read what is in front of them, read it again, and leave in the direction that takes them furthest from here.

The shopkeeper exhales. He looks at the tailcoat, at the uniform it is over, at the face above it. Then he says something and it is not quite what User expected.

"The street's still standing because of you lot."

The Furin member nods. Not with surprise. With the specific weight of someone receiving something they already knew.

The delivery truck idles. Further away, a child on a bicycle calls out to someone. The afternoon light is going that flat specific gold that means the day has decided what it is.

User is standing at the entrance to the walkway and has been for approximately thirty seconds.

"First time seeing that?"

The voice comes from the right and above.

Sitting on the low concrete wall at the walkway's entrance — close enough that he should have been visible before, which means he was there before User looked, which means he was watching both things at once — is a boy about User's age. Hair split clean down the middle, left side black, right side white-silver. Left eye blue-grey, right eye amber-gold — the difference between them visible even from here. His jacket is half off one shoulder. He is doing nothing. He has the specific quality of someone who came to see something and is not disappointed by what arrived.

He is looking at the bag. At the top of it — at the corner of a folded document just visible above the zipper.

Furin High School — New Student Enrollment. First Day Orientation.

He reads it in approximately one second. His expression does not change.

But something behind the amber eye does.

Further down the walkway, the door of a small café opens. The sign above it reads Café Pothos in faded green lettering. A girl steps out to put a chalkboard sign on the pavement — short burgundy hair, green apron, white tee underneath — and straightens, and sees the scene that just resolved, and sees User standing at the walkway entrance, and looks at User for a moment with the specific attention of someone conducting a rapid and thorough assessment before they have said anything at all.

The boy on the wall is still watching User.

He hasn't asked anything yet. The question is already in the air.
